weirdest thing on a college application ive ever seen...

so I was going through the william and mary website and i found their college application requirements and optional materials list. look at their optional materials list.

Optional Materials include:

* SAT II Subject Tests
* Teacher Recommendations
* Your picture

I was looking at it and thinking, thats so weird... why do they want a picture of you?

heres the link: http://www.wm.edu/admission/?id=3137

To make sure you're of the Aryan Race....hahaha, idk really. Maybe they make a book of all the acceptees or something

If I remember, Georgetown I believe also requests a picture, cause I remember, like how superficial can they be (jk), but yeah, it was a weird request.

they have that on many applications. i think they just want classy people.

At Wake they ask for your picture. But that of course is just to keep the ugly people out :)

They do that at UPenn and Brown as well...I think it just adds a personal touch to an application so the admission officer can identify a person with a face.

It's to discriminate against asians.

No as weird as the ASU application.

Optional Materials include:

SAT II Subject Tests

Academic Transcript

SAT and/or ACT

Teacher Recommendations

Your Picture

Length of ***** or Bust Size

I am applying GU Early Action (im filling out the app at this moment) and we have to attach a picture in the front of our Application.

Emory wanted one too, they said that it was better to attach an application with a face. Makes sense.

It still makes you wonder if someone who's really weird looking would be discriminated against right away just because judging by appearance is a part of human nature...

Personal touch/making the application a person rather than a number - that's the official reason I've heard. There are other potential uses as well, though: it discourages white applicants from falsely claiming URM status, and at one small college I saw the recruiter look through the photos before giving a campus tour so he could impressively greet applicants by name.

prolly a loophole for colleges to use who can't use race on admissions....

I agree jli...but at least it's optional for W and M. So I guess if you want to add the personal touch, then you can, but if you don't want to, then you don't have to. I would think the admissions committee would be mature enough to not use appearance as a deciding factor, but it is true that who knows, a goofy pic of someone could set a completely different tone to their app. Of course if that is "them" then I would think conversely it would work in their favor by making seem more authentic and imparting a more genuine impression on the committee.

Rice puts an empty square on the application and asks you to fill it with whatever you want.

For Georgetown? Not a chance. Though we are a very good lookin' group of people, we definitely have weirdies (including, but not exclusive to me).

So what's the whackiest thing anyone ever filled in for the Rice box?

"No as weird as the ASU application.

lmao i chuckled when i read that, it would be funny if a college really put that on there

I wasn't that wacky; I inserted a picture of Ed Ruscha's "Oof," one of my favorite paintings.
