Welcome... and chances. (Sorry)

Hey Y'all, first time on this site. I was hoping you could give me your opinons about my chances of getting into UW, either honors or regular. I'm still a junior so really just wondering if I'm on the right track so far. Thanks.

In-State
3.8 GPA (as of first trimester of junior year)
Full IB
SAT 1990 (Verbal-710, Math-670, Writting-610)

EC-
Debate Club (Sophomore, Junior(Treasurer))
Improv Comedy (Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior)
Theater -
3 Plays
Chosen to perform in Scotland for high school theater compitition.

Thanks Again.

You need to raise your math SAT a tad more, also improve your writing. UW isn't an easy school to get into. Also lower your GPA from a 3.8 to a 3.6. UW is easily intimidated by too high of a GPA. You might get rejected for that.A buddy of mine with a 4.0 and similar EC to yours was outright rejected.

Yeah, definitely raise your math score to about 750.. and your writing should be around 760.

It depends on whether or not you are in state. Either way you have little chance of getting in honors. If you're instate you have a good chance in. If not, keep the grades up and raise the SAT a bit and you should be fine. The UW really isn't that hard to get into as long as you're instate. Your major downside is no sports and not enough EC's to make up for it. So this spring do track or something. Right now it's not too far below 50% OOS.

I think the previous posters are very much exaggerating the difficulty of getting into UW. There are well-known criteria that the admissions people look at when evaluating your application. These are, in approx. order of importance:

GPA

Course Selection

SATs

Essays

Extracurriculars

'diversity factor' (i.e. do you have any special talents or unique background that the UW is interested in?)

If you can fulfill four of these categories well, then you should be in excellent shape.

Your GPA is more than enough to get you in, provided that your high school is not known for grade inflation. UW does take this into account, so I would research the extent to which your school does this. They measure the drop from avg. hs gpa to first quarter UW gpa. The schools with the least drop therefore have the lowest grade inflation.

SATs could improve, of course, and I would encourage you to retake if possible, but if you don't raise them too much it's not the end of the world.

Extracurriculars seem pretty good, just make sure you describe their significance well on your application. They don't want to read anything mundane, i.e. don't tell them what you did at debate team, show them how it influenced you as a person or prepared you for college.

Essays should be your saving grace. If you express yourself well here, it should be a slam-dunk for you.

I got in w/a 3.5 gpa, 800verbal, 600math, 720writing, and reasonably good essays. I'm also white and suburban, so I'm definitely not benefiting from under-the-table affirmative action.

Just make sure those essays rock their socks off and you should be fine!

Good luck!

jack you'll never get in
no way, no how, nu-uh
people like trevor might, but you won't :P
jk, you'll be fine for regular, honestly I have no idea for honors
