Please join me in welcoming our newest College Rep, sbuadmissions from SUNY Stonybrook!

(As a reminder, we have taken reasonable steps to verify that our College Rep members are indeed who they claim to be. If you encounter anyone in the community who claims to be from a college's admissions office but isn't designated as a College Rep, please let us know and be wary of any advice provided before that person is so designated.)

Stop in and say hello in this thread, but please do NOT use this thread to ask questions - start a new thread with an appropriate title. In addition, since our College Reps are busy people, please do NOT start threads asking for help specifically from the Rep - please post the query to the community in general, and you'll be likely to get multiple informed views on the subject. If the College Rep can provide useful input, no doubt he/she will chime in.

I have a question. What kind of candidate receives scholarships (merit aid)? Is there a range of SAT scores or GPAs or extracirricular involvement? What is the lowest and highest amount of merit aid SBU will award?

i called up the honors program at Stony brook today and the lady on the other line was the meanest person i had ever spoken to. She was rude and did not answer any question properly. Are all people at stony brook like that?

Same thing that happened to me. But I asked if they had all my stuff(Transcript n'such.)

Not to clog the welcome thread with Honors College discussion, but I'd bet they're probably pretty swamped with folks freaking out that their stuff hasn't been received. If you've been admitted, odds are we have your transcripts and stuff. I know e-mail's not necessarily as immediate as a phone call, but don't be afraid to shoot us an e-mail; it gives us plenty of time to check all the paperwork.

(Plus -- you get it in writing that we have all your stuff, which is good for your peace of mind.)

Danny - Thanks for the plug for your friend; I can't speak to other folks' applications, but I wish her the best of luck in her college search. :)

Chocolate - Scholarship consideration usually starts around a 93 HS average and around a 1300ish reading/math SAT; it kinda depends on the applicant pool. That's roughly where it was last year. As far as the dollars go, we start at $1000 and go all the way up to full room and board.

Hope this helps, and feel free to drop me a line if you have any other questions. E-mail and Web address are in my profile.

Most colleges at least have people on the phone who try to be polite and friendly.. and some colleges really do have genuinely nice people on their phones, but everytime I called SBU it was just some lady who was really rude =/

Your presence on this site just shows that Stony Brook Univ is moving in the right direction. When I was on campus last year I could not believe the change from 10 yrs ago! The campus has come a long way.

While my daughter was at SB, she liked her teachers and had a very nice relationship with her advisor and I actually found the bursar's office to be quite helpful on the phone. When dealing with some of the other administative offices, we felt like we were dealing with DMV people.

Thanks, SBMom. It's hard to break old biases, but we're trying. Honestly? Fourteen years ago, when I was looking at colleges, I didn't even look at Stony Brook. It was a very different place then; I've been here over two years now, and I'm honestly stunned by how impressive this campus is. I know I'm paid to say that, but if I didn't believe in it, I wouldn't waste my time; there are plenty of college admissions jobs out there, working for schools with a quarter of the stuff that goes on here. I love coming back on weekends for ballgames and events; it really feels like a college campus should feel.
