Welcome Week-tip sharing

Hi Mavitale. I didn’t notice that you said that you shopped on line. You need to take your list from our online purchase, go to your local BBB, register (takes two minutes), tell them that you want the store in Metarie and then walk around the store with the zap gun. When you are done, the sales associate will enter it into the computer and tell you exactly what the store in NOLA has and does not have (in my experience, they had everything except one small item). The store in NOLA will immediately pack up and hold your order. When you get there next week, they will empty your order into shopping carts and then you can decide which items you want and which you don’t . You are not obligated to purchase what you zapped.

OK, so I shopped online but didn’t pay for anything. My local BBB is still a half hour away, so it’s not that ‘local’. I’m going to try and call them today and give them the order # and see if they’ll hold it until the 23rd.

I went to a BBB in NJ the other day because I happened to be near it, and it was so gigantic I couldn’t stand it. I was born without the shopping gene… just give me a website and a search field. ;)

Dropped two boxes at the Fed Ex store today for shipping. $97 total for two 27lb boxes with insurance. We packed enough in the boxes so that I don’t think I’ll need to stuff two big suitcases full when I fly down to meet him on 8/23!

Even though it is kind of expensive (although less so if you are taking an airline that charges for luggage anyway), I do think the FedEx program makes the traveling a lot easier. Same with the BBB pickups, etc. Good luck to all of you leaving soon for NOLA Experience!

Son volunteered to help some friends move in today at Arizona State University. Kind of a preview of what to expect (generally) when we get to Tulane next week. Good practical experience for him. I did mention that he can’t get beignets in Tempe!!

My D and I visited ASU to look at Barrett Honors College there. That campus and Tulane, and Phoenix/Tempe vs. NOLA couldn’t be much more different! Not saying the other is bad (although frankly I wasn’t blown away with the ASU campus but I do like the Southwest) but man, it was a totally different feeling than you get at Tulane and NOLA.

Totally agree. That’s a big consideration and why I encouraged S to apply to Tulane. Along with academics, the NOLA experience will add a great deal to his overall education. He has spent all his life in the West and Southwest. Time to spread his wings. BTW he just reported that ASU move in day was kind of quiet. He expects next Saturday will be very different. We are pumped!!!

It is a fun day, AZmustang, and I have to say the time we were doing it and the next year when I happened to be in NOLA and saw that class moving in, it goes like clockwork. I would say the biggest risk is if there are downpours all morning. That didn’t happen either year I mention above, but I could imagine it would make things more difficult. So fingers crossed and all that for no rain.

As for going to school away from home, I am sure I have said this dozens of times, but I think that is a highly significant factor. I know it isn’t always possible for some students and their families, but it certainly is preferable when it is doable, IMO.

Please explain this “rain” thing. It’s pretty much a foreign concept out here in the desert. We will cross our fingers for no rain in New Orleans on Saturday (just to be sociable) but is it possible to arrange for a little wet weather as we drive across Texas on the way? Need to check if my windshield wipers still work. All the move in tips about students bringing wet weather gear are greatly appreciated.

LOL about rain. Another extreme contrast between the two locations. I, at least, am unfamiliar with the last time a hurricane hit AZ.

My plan is to do the BBB pickup on Friday with my rental car. Do I have to be concerned about leaving it on the street (I’m staying at the Park View across the street) full of stuff? I’m not sure what choice I have, really. Hopefully no one is inclined to steal sheets and towels and a shower caddy.

Can’t you bring the stuff into your room? Otherwise just make sure it is hidden in the trunk.

To avoid keeping items from BBB in the car overnight, I plan to help my S move in Sat. morning, get a look at sizes of things + spaces in the room, then go to BBB in the afternoon. I only want to make 1 trip there…

Oh Bloomy… THAT’S A GREAT IDEA. I’m renting an SUV so unless I cover everything with a blanket it’s going to be visible. I like your plan better.

My daughter has decided a bicycle is probably a good Idea. So that was yesterday’s adventure. Ended up at GNO Cyclery over on South Carrolton close to campus. Prices around town are fairly consistent. Today she discovered Fresh Market, what a selection. I know where the bicycle will be going until the streetcar is running all the way through.
Also remembered questions about office supplies. There is still an Office Depot back up St. Charles toward Lee Circle.
Can’t wait until next weekend to meet everyone.

Does anyone know how students can check the balance of their Wavebucks? Thanks

Sportsforher- if you sign into Gibson the menu on the left includes "splash card. ". If u click on it u can see your balance of wavebucks.

Has anyone seen a link to a video of the convocation ceremony? UTube has a version of a previous years ceremony but I haven’t seen anything about this one (dare I say ours). Thanks

Probably hasn’t been edited and posted yet. Hopefully soon.

I am also looking for the link to the Business School parent orientation that took place on Sunday (we had an early flight back). Does anyone know where I can find this?
