We're excited that you have applied for Fall 2008 admission to the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego! As a top applicant to the university, we know you'd like to know a little more about our school.

The Jacobs School is a premier research school set apart by our young, innovative culture and integrative engineering approach. The Jacobs School ranks 9th in the world among all engineering schools according to the Academic Rankings of World Universities (conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2007). As the largest engineering school in the prestigious University of California system our faculty are renowned in their fields, they are passionate about what they do, and they are committed to providing inspired education and dedicated mentorship.

The Jacobs School provides an education that focuses on engineering fundamentals beginning in the freshman year, and we offer a broad range of opportunities for hands-on engineering experience. Our education extends beyond the classroom to research in our world-class laboratories, active student organizations, team engineering programs, and corporate internship opportunities - all of which develop skills that make our graduates highly competitive in industry and academia.

Over the next three weeks, we will be sending you bi-weekly emails to let you know what's so great about being a student at the Jacobs School.

Sincerely,
Engineering Student Services
UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering

Coming next...find out how our innovative Team Engineering programs allow our students to apply theory to real-world challenges in the community and corporate environment.

Does this imply anything? and did anyone here at CC get this email??

Last year, I think everyone on this board got it. I got it and got in later on, but I think a couple of people got it and didn't get in. I'd say its a good sign, but not a sure-fire thing in the least.

be realistic. they're not going to schmooze you and tell you you're a "top applicant," only to reject you.

if you're at all dubious, just give the engineering school a call and ask how they got a hold of your information. if it's from the "admit" pile of students who declared an engineering major, you've got your answer.

same goes for financial aid -- they're not going to offer money to somebody they deny admission to. waste of time!

Well, I didn't mean to spoil the euphoria here, but UCSD really isn't known for early decisions like this. That's UCLA. Last year, the people on the UCSD board came to the conclusion that everyone got it because, well, everyone did. I don't know how far back the search capabilities on the forum are but I'm pretty sure there was a thread about this a while back.

i emailed them about this question and they replied:
Thank you for applying to the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San
Diego. In regards to your question, receipt of the e-mail you refer to
does not constitute or guarantee admission to UCSD or the Jacobs School.
Admission to UC San Diego is handled directly by the Office of
Admissions and Relations with Schools. I believe admissions decisions will be
available for you to view online sometime in late March or early-to-mid
April.

bitterxaurum, that's "Go away and stop bothering us" by a writer who's being paid by the word.

There's absolutely no reason to ask any of the UCs (or, likely, any college) about whether any action or inaction on their part constitutes anything beyond what's on the face. You can be looking at a document that says your app is so excellent they're planning to rename the gym in your honor, would you please attend the ceremony, but oh-by-the-way this doesn't mean we're actually going to admit you.

Read postings from a year ago, or listen to the wisest-sounding anecdotes posted here and you'll get a much better answer.

Maybe you're in the running to be a Jacobs scholar. I'd drool over that full ride + extra benefits. I hear they give you money in accordance to the UCSD cost estimates for the year....so if you don't spend, what, $1200 a year on books, you get to keep that money. Sexy.

(Or maybe you got admitted...good job anyway!)
