Wesleyan Freeman Scholarship Finalists: UNITE!

e1dj86: I hope so :)
and do you guys know anything about the Freeman dinner in Oct? it seems that we will have to perform something traditional :)

exciting!!! i'm looking forward to that! :D
btw, i just renewed my passport today, and it's quite shocking that they actually changed my passport number.. is that the normal practice in other countries also? with the new passport, i can contact the us embassy already..

btw, ngohuongly, who told u about the freeman dinner thing?

Oh, so this is the thread everyone has been on... Haiyah, I started a Freeman finalists thread in the Wesleyan forum some time ago but no one replied...

Anyway, I'm an alternate (from Malaysia) for the scholarship, but I'm sure I don't have a chance of getting it since Eric and Kin Yan will probably snap up the offer (who wouldn't?).

But then, I got a nearly-full scholarship at Bard College (full tuition + room and board), so I'm not upset -- though Bard is obviously nowhere near Wes in ranking (and lower than Oberlin, which also accepted me), I think it's going to be a good place for me.

So congratulations, all of you!

By the way, Eric -- so you're the mystery guy. Too bad most people didn't stay long enough at the reception for me to take down their e-mails -- I have been in touch with Yiwen, Jo Ling and Kin Yan, and (with the exception of Kin Yan, who has been away at camp) we have been wondering who the other winner is! Which secondary school were you from again?

iwan: we talked to a malaysian freeman 08' and he told us abt that freeman night thing... he told us that we need to give mr. n mrs freeman some gifts that represent our cultures and do a little performance or sth. i think it's gonna be fun :p

wmgan: congratz! Bard's a great place, and nvm the rankings, i'm sure you'd love it there :) and full tuition + room + board - that's WONDERFUL! It's actually like the freeman scholarship, just that it's in Bard, im really happy for you!

btw i've just looked at the US visa requirement and didnt see anything abt medical checkup... thought i need to get one, if i dont see it anywhere does that mean i actually dont?

@iwan: same as jurily, the freeman '08 told me. by the way, what school do you go to?

@wmgan: congrats! wow, bard is wonderful. agree with jurily, full tuition + room + board is great. I hope we can see each other in the near future :)

@jurily: I haven't checked the requirements yet, but that's weird. I'm sure I'll have to be vaccinated against a number of diseases. It's just as scary as the visa application :P

This is our profile so far:

e1dj86: Iwan -- Indonesia (currently in Singapore) -- Mathematics-Economics

jurily: jurily? -- HongKong -- Government/Int'l Relations

crygoose: ??? -- Singapore -- ???

ngohuongly88: Ly -- Vietnam -- Women's Studies

about:blank: probably go to Wes

bin: bin? -- China -- ???

eric_sia: Eric? -- Malaysia -- ???

wmgan (Bard): ??? -- Malaysia -- ???

my name is mandy, most ppl call me manda though v

Eric_Sia: Eric Sia Kuan-Rong -- Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia -- Physics

@wmgan: Sorry, Kin Yan and I have both accepted. I don't know nuts about Bard (or most other US universities/colleges for that matter), but I am sure you will really enjoy yourself there.

Did not stay long at the reception, I left right after Mr. and Mrs. Freeman made their exit. Father had a plane to catch at the airport.... I would love to get in contact with you all, did not manage to get anyone's contact that night!!

I studied at SMK Chong Hwa, Jalan Gombak in Kuala Lumpur for the SPM (the Malaysian equivalent of O-levels), then did my Cambridge A-levels in Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Setapak, KL. Nothing really exceptional about me, I am working on the theory that Kin Yan and I got in because we want to do Physics. It's the International Year of Physics after all, and Wes has such a small physics department.

@e1dj86: Yes, they change your passport number each time you renew your passport. I just did mine last week as well.

I'm Kaishi (Singapore) and possible Econs/East Asian Studies/Govt major :) Still undecided!

e1dj86 (Iwan): u're in Singapore!! PM me :) Us Singapore Freemans would love to meet up with you :)

wmgan: congrats on bard :)

wow, this is amazing. so many posts within a few hours :)
hi wuiming! yup, wmgan's name is Gan Wui Ming (it's ok for me to expose ur real name, rite, wuiming? :) )
hey, since we've known each other's name, we might as well use our real names, k?
so, that's iwan, ly, eric, manda, and kaishi, rite?
no, kaishi, i was in singapore (for four years), but now i'm in indonesia. i thought i told u that in my PM to u last time? hey, why don't u just invite the other sporean scholar to join us here?
do you think we can ask our seniors to give us the list of all the scholars this year, so perhaps we can form a yahoo group, or, even better, invite everyone to this thread? :D

@Wui Ming: Hey, I remember that name.... You were studying in Singapore on the ASEAN Scholarship right?

@Iwan: Well Manda found the Xanga site of one of the Thailand scholars for this year. I sent her an email, but she didn't say much in the reply. I already sent her a link to this thread, beats me why she hasn't turned up yet. Anyhow, here's her email address: fon_florraine@hotmail.com

Eric -- yup, I'm the ASEAN guy. I'm sorry, I forgot which school you're from?

Can you PM me your e-mail address? Thanks.

wow, this thread rocks! and we rock too! :D

hey, how many of you guys met the Freemans? They didn't come to VN? What do you think of them?

@eric: you know what? my friend also wants to major in Physics and Astronomy. you may be right about the year of physics and the department, but I do think you are very special.

hey, do you all use Y!M? I like Iwan's idea. Maybe we can have a conference. I believe we can easily arrange the time, Sat night for example.

folks i've a letter from Wes!! basically it tells what the scholarship includes(like one semster of studying abroad yay), what it DOESNT include (like the 12-college exchange program n private music lessons... bummer) and what we should do (sharing our culture etc). i was hoping for an I20 but obviously it is far from ready... but its still nice to receive sth with wes' red n black shield on the envelope :D

i have aim: mignonettemanda, not online often though. conference would be great!! i'd love that

i met the Freemans. they're really nice. in particular, mrs freeman was so funny during the interview. in fact, it really helped us to have her during the interview. she often answered the other interviewers' questions for us, heh.
the year of physics? really? when will they have the year of mathematics-economics? :)
ly, actually i was thinking of the Yahoo mailing list. well, i like messenger too, it's just that i hv to download the software first :) ly, u also asked me my school rite? it's raffles junior college in singapore.. why? do u hv any ASEAN scholar friends in singapore?

i want the wes package too!

@Wui Ming: You really ought to read the thread more carefully, both my 'schools' and email addresses have been posted already.

Email: Siakuanrong@yahoo.com

Multiply: http://bootingravy.multiply.com

SPM: SMK Chong Hwa, Jalan Gombak, Kuala lumpur.
A-levels: Tunku Abdul Rahman College, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur.

@Manda: Tell us more! Why don't you post the whole of the letter? I'm sure we would all love to read it. :)

@Ly: The Freemans were great. When the conversation turned to martial arts, Mr Freeman mentioned how he used to learn Karate/Judo. Mrs Freeman then complained that he used to practise on her at home. They are simply marvelous people!

Sorry lah Eric, I didn't read every single post. Makes me sad, you know, to read all the joyful posts about getting the scholarship. =( Nah just kidding.

eric: cant post the whole letter, it's like 4 pages long, and very very informative... and i dont think it's the legendary package we kept talking abt either cuz it doesnt have anything more than the letter... aiya i'm really looking forward to gettin the housing package!! n da I20

ly: i havnt met with the freemans :( but im really looking forward to the freeman nite and i'm sure they're nice ppl (afterall they're paying for everything i'm gonna need in the next 4 yrs haha)

should i talk abt my highschool too? heep yunn school in HK, nth special... and i do the A levels too v
