I plan on applying to Wesleyan University and for the teacher recommendations they suggest that students choose a teacher from a math/science department and one from the humanities. Would it look bad if I have both of my recommendations from science teachers? I just have better relationships with those teachers and I feel as though they would each give me a strong letter that better reflects who I am than my teachers in the humanities departments. Is this okay? Or should I just stick to what Wesleyan suggested?
I would suggest that you do what they ask. They seem pretty clear about wanting the perspective of teachers in different disciplines.
I totally agree with happy1. Good luck!
Personally, I think “it depends.” If you believe you can muster good/very strong recommendations from two disciplines, then that is absolutely what you should do. But if you think that you are really trading a great recommendation for a lukewarm one, you need to make a tough decision. I’m pretty sure my son (who did get in) choose two humanities teachers who he believed would hit it out of the park, and just let his grades do the talking on the math/science side since he knew (despite stellar grades) he wasn’t going to get a particularly stellar recommendation there. It is a calculated risk and I don’t think there a roadmap.
