My son got into Flora Rose house in one of the gothic buildings for next year. I’m happy he got housing especially west campus for the experience but can anyone give me the low down on living in one of the gothic buildings?
@CALSmom my D lives in Boldt Tower this year and loves it (except having to walk up the slope in winter! lol). She is in Language House. IMO the West Campus experience is great for students and provides a really nice living/learning environment. Plus, the food is really good on West Campus compared to her freshman experience on North. Her room is nice, not fancy, but quite adequate. She;s totally enjoying her West Campus experience.
Thanks @TiggyB62. My son won’t mind the slope and he eats dinner at west campus weekly. I was worried that the gothic buildings were decrepit
@CALSmom actually her room in Boldt Tower is nice enough. Very large windows that open to a courtyard, large closet that she and her roommate share. I personally could do without the carpeting, (as I’m sure dorm room carpeting doesn’t get cleaned very often!), but an area rug makes it look nicer. Bathrooms on the floor are decent. Old, but decent enough.
Thanks again! I have peace of mind
I have many friends living in Lyon Hall (the Rose gothic) and I spend a lot of my time there.
From what I have heard from Geoffrey B. Hill (the Rose Asst. Dean), all the gothics need an estimated $68 million in repairs. The buildings aren’t decrepit but are definitely behind in maintenance compared to the newer main halls.
The biggest issue for me is the lack of elevators. If you live on one of the higher floors, walking up and down multiple times a day is going to become a pain.
@jfx246 true! Boldt Tower has narrow stairwells and no elevators. Moving in and out is a pain. But same was true for Balch when my D lived there.
Thankfully he picked a lower floor!
Thanks for your input
