At our local WP Parents Club new cadet picnic on 6/4/06, Major Romans sent the message that the class of 2010 is over by 30 students. That doesn't include Wait List people :-(. He was warning cadidates to stay straight because they are looking for reasons to reduce their numbers before R-Day.

How can they make a mistake like this? I understand Congress mandates the proper number of Cadets. Does that mean they are going to HAVE to cut people out. I can just imagine R-day they lop off the 30 people with the lowest SATs or GPAs or CFA scores. Worse yet, they'll be trying to chase people off during the summer...

Congress's oversight is FUBAR nowadays.

USMA has to bet that some are not going to accept or get through all the DOMerb, etc. issues and it is a crap shoot for them as well as too how many actually accept. Thus, if you are WL, pay your deposits elsewhere. If you have accepted, make sure all the t's are crossed and i's dotted. They will find room for the extra 30, but there will be little incentive to give anyone the benefit of the doubt on anything.

The incoming class of 2010 will lose more than that before the academic year even begins from normal attrition. I wouldn't be too concerned. The number of the Corps of cadets is set by Congress. The class of 2010 doesnt join that number officially until A Day.

Is this a for sure thing? Or just a rumor? I just don't understand how, with all the work that the admissions office does, they could make such a mistake!

Candidates and Parents Relax - If that's possible right now.

Assuming the 30 candidate "overbooking" comment is true, West Point will not change it's standards to increase the separation rate for cadets.

Class size numbers have bounced around in prior years. Class of 2002 had 1246 cadets admitted while the following Class of 2003 had only 1134. Despite the higher number of admitted cadets, the graduation rate for the Class of 2002 was 77% while the Class of 2003 was 75%.

Similarly, the Class of 2007 admitted 1314 candidates while the prior Class of 2006 admitted 1197 candidates. The separation rate of the 2007 Class has not been proportiately higher.

I look at the increased acceptance rate as a possitive. More committed young men and women to serve our country.

God bless them all.

along this line of discussion........do you feel WP will really be angry if I have a 1 on an AP exam??

the reasons why I feel I got a bad grade are many and various.....and I wont go into them now, however, I can tell you that the exam was AP Latin Lit, and because WP doesnt even offer Latin I hope I wont be in trouble.

Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you have to show them your AP exam grades, I didn't.

yoyo24-- I highly doubt that your AP exam score will affect you. AP exams are what you do on your own time. They are there to measure how well you'd do in a college-level course. Sure, good scores can validate you but I really think you have nothing to worry about.

By the way--the number (and this is straight from COL Curry, head of DMI and a member of the Admission's board) for those admitted to the class of 2010 is 1,356. It was actually a mistake--they didn't think so many would accept.
