West Point Packing List

All blades need to be under three inches. I asked a friend who's a plebe right now and he said a Leatherman would be best.

Take a leatherman. Take razors (for the guys). Pack your box of games to have your parents send you later, or just stash them with the rest of your stuff in the trunk room until after Beast. You can bring an external hard drive, but anything you put on it can be monitored, because you're using an official, government network...so no porn or illegal downloads. Also, I'd pack that carefully and mail it later, since the vibrations aren't all that good for hard drives.

Depending on what they confiscate, you may see it again. I got my contacts back after Beast, all the fake IDs that went into the amnesty box got destroyed. Some stuff is only temporarily illegal, like your cellphone, other stuff is never allowed, like a knife over three inches. Knives are good for lots of stuff, cutting 550 cord and tape, opening stuff quickly, scraping carbon off the bolt of your weapon...the list goes on and on.

What shoe cleaning stuff... should I pack a stiff brillo brush or will all that stuff be taken care of... Are boxers allowed

Take a nail brush...boxers are a no in PTs, but other than that??? Any guys out there want to weight in? I took civillian underwear to Beast and didn't have a problem wearing it over the summer...

I saw the following packing list on a myspace group. Can you guys look over the list and see if it's a solid packing list? Also, if possible, please add the quantities of certain items. Please add onto/ subtract from the list as you see fit.

Running shoes
Boots
Pumps
Boot socks, socks
Bathing suit
Watch
Alarm Clock
Ziploc bags
Baby wipes
Toothbrush
Deodorant
Conditioner
Lotion
Gold Bond body powder
Feminine stuff
Stationary & Address Book
Mechanical Pencils w/ Lead
Flashlight
Under-armor shorts & Sports Bras
Lighter
Combo lock
Swiss-Army Knife
Camo-Compact
Off-Deep Woods Bug Spray
Small Mirror
Ruck Straps
Electrical Tape
Medical Tape
Wooden Ruler (Hospital corners)

Don't take the pumps, you won't need them until the academic year...october-ish.
Boot socks - BLACK - Fox River is my personal favorite, Take about 10 pairs. I know that's about eighty bucks, but they're really, really good socks
If you bring athletic socks, get the crew cut ones that come up to your calf, NO LOGOS.
Skip the bathing suit, again, you'll get one issued.
Ziplocks - Gallon and quart sized freezer bags are best, maybe 30 of each. Also available at the C-Store. Good for packing your ruck. When you go to frederick, pack a full change of stuff in each freezerbag - t-shirt, socks, underwear, hair ties for the girls, and that way you can grab and go. Pack a few sets of PTs like that too, socks, shorts, t-shirts, underwear...it's easier than trying to dig around for stuff, and keeps your clothes cleaner.
Pencils are good, take BLACK pens too
Skip the locks, you'll get them issued.
Flashlight - one of the little mini mags would be great. Try and get one with a red lense filter.
Camo-compact - skip it, you probably won't be allowed to use it.

My D says bring lots of band-aids--esp the kind for blisters. That was the number one item we mailed her thorughout Beast. She never had enough of them. The number two item we sent that summer was "shout wipes" to help her keep her uniform clean.

don't take the pumps? I thought on R-Day everybody is wearing those shoes

R-day uniform = low quarters, black socks, pt shorts, white shirt, 2-quart canteen, knowledge book, and BCG's (if applicable). Basically, it's a humiliation uniform that makes for some good laughs when you're not a New Cadet.

Sorry, girl here. When you said pumps, I envisioned a modesly heeled, rounded toe, black shoe, that women wear with formal uniforms. Low quarters or oxfords are what I'd consider the day to day shoes. In any case, you won't need heels at Beast :)

Something to look forward to...

Brings a tear to my eye...

I can't wait!

Will they issue watches and alarm clocks... If not what watch do you suggest... Is their some limitations... And a what about " Ruck Straps" what is that...

You won't be issued a watch, or an alarm clock. Bring a sports watch with several alarms on it, that way you can set them for various events throughout the day. Alarm clock - make sure it's battery powered. Ruck straps - they're the shoulder harness for your ruck sack, if I remember correctly, you get issued the nice cushy ones anyway, so no need to buy and bring...you'll get them there.

Don't bring an expensive alarm clock to Beast. In our D's comapny ALL alarm clocks were confiscated and she never saw hers again. Make sure your watch has an alarm and has a face you can light up--she said that came in handy while reading knowledge and letters from home under the sheets at night.

bump
Just seeing if anyone has any other suggestions

So could someone run over a list of stuff that is suggested to bring including the stuff WP tells you to bring... I think I lost my list :(

I know someone said no ipods til after winter break, are we allowed to have family send us our dvds/cds?

Probably not till after Christmas, which is when the plebes traditionally get some of their privledges.

I know our D wasn't allowed to take any dvd movies, ipod, etc until after winter break.
