how is West Virginia? good/bad?

Depends on what you like. Try looking it up in Princeton Review's Top 357 Colleges.

My brother and some of my friends go there, so I could probably answer any specific questions. They have an honors program that is pretty good (warning: the honors dorm is no better than any of the others, worse than some). I would say it is a typical state school, only WAY more party centered. I mean, I've been in the honors dorm at 8 pm on a tuesday evening and seen many people stumbling around w/ bottles of vodka or drunkenly removing light fixtures. I don't know how familiar you are with the campus, but it is a "city" campus, with two separate sections. You have to take the PRT (personal rapid transit) to get in between. Football is really big. My friends have mostly liked their professors and classes, which are generally not too big.

My daughter is going to WVU barring an acceptance from Northeastern's waitlist. She visited the campus and was impressed with what she saw. Dorms on Evansdale were fairly typical, but certainly liveable. The student athletic center is incredible with rock walls, indoor pools, lots of treadmills, steppers, etc, racquetball courts, exercise classes, etc, etc etc. She is housed on Evansdale, which is a PRT ride away from main campus, but much closer to the football, basketball and athletic center.

As far as the party school reference, I think there are many schools you could attend and find all sorts of partying. It depends on what are you are going for, and I did read a quote somewhere that said "if you are going to WVU to party, you won't last more than a year".

From a parent's perspective, the value is wonderful, much more reasonable priced - in fact WVU was about the same as instate room and board from Rutgers.

Morgantown is definitely a college town, with coffee shops, cafes, clubs, shopping etc, so there is plenty to do if you are not into Mountaineer sports!

Hope that helps. My daughter was sold originally on school in Boston and couldn't imagine herself anywhere else. Her waitlist at Northeastern forced her to look seriously at her other options - Ithaca College and Rutgers in particular, and she saw herself being the happiest at WVU. She didn't like Ithaca at all, and unfortunately, Rutgers is just too close to home for her taste!

i know a girl who goes there. BIG party school.

i was at wvu for a band thing. there are two campuses and the people I talked to liked it, but the one later transferred. I guess she had had some roommate issues, the first roommate had some drinking issues i think and the other got an std i think and the guy she was with stole everything from their room. the arts building is so so but the theater is nice. there seemed to be a lot of clubs in town and various other shops. i'm not sure if i was downtown or just in a neighborhood but it was not too big but i think it had more than a small town. I know their music program is pretty strong, but other than that i don't know anything about other programs. i too have heard it is a party school and sports are big.

Morgantown is one of the bigger cities in WV, but it is basically a large town, very college oriented. Probably around 25-30,000 people. There are plenty of nice shops, malls, coffee shops, restaurants, and of course clubs/bars. I really didn't want to go there because it is so much a party school. Social life really centers around alcohol. However-if you like to party sometimes, you can manage to do other things and keep your grades up.

It is a pretty big joke.

any more info ?

I'm not sure what you are interested in--if you have any specific questions or things you want to know about, I could probably answer them. My brother chose WVU partly because he didn't want to go to the trouble to do a big application thing, partly because he could easily get scholarships there, but mostly because of their engineering program. He will get a double major in aerospace and mechanical engineering w/out any extra time (partly because he had some college credits when he got there).

Small annoyance: parking is absolutely horrible. There aren't enough places to park on campus or in town, and the solution of WVU seems to be to give more tickets.

I have some friends who didn't really want to go there but had to for financial reasons, and ended up liking it a lot.

I would describe both the food and the dorms as average. Nothing special, but not bad either.

I don't know much about scholarships for out of state students, but I'm sure they are available.
