I am going into my sophomore year at Villanova, but want to transfer to a better, more diverse university. Last year I applied for transfer, but only to two schools-- UNC and UMich. I was waitlisted, then rejected at UNC, flat out rejected at UMich. Here are some stats:

3.4 college GPA
approx 90 HS GPA
Many college/HS extracurriculars
mid 1800's SAT

Suggestions for other schools that I could transfer to (hoping for a spring transfer) would be great. Thanks.

You should probably re-take your SAT's. I know most colleges don't have a problem taking them after High School but I do not speciically know whether UNC or Michigan allows you to do that.

Some schools are really looking for that 3.5+ college GPA (either explicitly stated in their transfer criteria or an "unofficial" benchmark). So you might try for that extra inch in your GPA.

Also, we would need to know more to be much help re what you are "doing wrong." Did those two schools require prof recs? Did you know any profs well enough to get good ones? What do you plan for a major and how did your freshman courseload relate to that?

I'm going to try very hard to get above a 3.5-- and I thnk I can manage it. Neither school required prof recs, however, this year I will submit them now that I know two prof's personally so I will reciever good, possibly very good, recommendations. I'm a math major, and have only recieved A's in my math courses (having only taken 2 math courses last year... haha). My only "bad" grade was in my freshman seminar-- a B-, which I believe reflected my prof's lack of respect for ideas other then those of the Catholic faith (it was a religion based class). Other than that, my course load was basic, taking intro to psych, philosophy, modern history, english, and intermediate spanish I and II. I was trying to get "core" classes out of the way.

I really do not want to retake my SAT-- its time consuming and I dont think I'll have time this semester.. do you think this will really affect my application?

I sympathize with not wanting to re-take the SAT. Tell us what your math and CR scores were. If you are planning a math major, that score will matter the most, rather than your M+CR+W score, or even your M+CR score. A lopsided SAT score that is high in math can work fine even for quite selective schools. Also, the scores matter a lot more at some schools than others. So, after you post them here and get reactions, you may want to start quick threads with specific school names in the titles re how important scores are; eg, "xxx on Math SATI, how competitive for Uxx?" Or PM some of the posters who have been admitted. cvjn (not sure I got that right) is one who got into UMich, for example and is a very helpful poster.

i don't think retaking the sat is necessary for you anymore (it could have helped if you took it last year though)
i happen to know that UNC is much tougher to transfer into as a sophomore than it is as a junior. i think you could get into both this year with out even changing that much. sending recs will certainly help and, of course, good essays.

Well, lookingi at UMich's Common Data Set (http://sitemaker.umich.edu/obpinfo/files/umaa_cds2007.pdf), your SAT is not too bad. They had the same freshman acceptance rate for math scores 700-799 as they did for scores 600-699. So IDK if you should re-take. Might depend on what other schools are on your list, as breaking that 700-mark could be an important psychological barrier for some other schools. As well, some would want to see the MathII for the SAT II, I think. (But I don't know if you are looking at such schools).

I do think that Spring transfer is not as likely. Michigan states that it gives a preference to Junior transfers.

Tell us a little more about what you mean by "better and more diverse."
