What are all the downfalls of being waitlisted?

I was waitlisted to Penn, and even thought it is my number one, I'm having difficulty keeping my reverence for the school.

What are the downfalls of being waitlisted?

If I were to get in, how would it affect me when it comes to dorms, scheduling, making friends, etc, etc?

Dorms & registering for classes all depend on how Penn works theirs and when you get off the WL. I don’t think it would matter w/Penn FA, but you should check that. I don’t think it would matter at all socially as you’ll start the same time as everyone else.

I agree with entomom. Some schools give their waitlisted students the last priority housing so they end up in the crappier dorms. That could affect the type of friends you make because instead of being matched up with someone, you could just be stuck into whatever dorm has the vacancy… Socially and for scheduling, it shouldn’t matter

Nobody else but you will know you were waitlisted unless you told them, so socially that would have no effect. In addition, WL is nothing to be frowned up as getting into the schools is getting into the school. So there should be no issues whatsoever. I think if you truly love the school, let them know, and if you get in, then go without any qualms.

All the downfalls? Seems you need to take into account that while getting in may be the answer to your prayers, at most schools few students are taken off waitlists. So a big downfall for all those students hoping until late August their number will be called is that they find it difficult to fully commit to the school they have been accepted at.

^Agree mike, I stated that in an earlier thread but for some reason answered this OP referring more to problems at the WL school:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1312540-there-cons-waitlist.html?highlight=waitlist

Yeah, I’m aware of that, Mike. :frowning: Like I said, I’m already a little peeved at Penn, and I certainly know that getting off the list is very difficult.

And late August? Wow, I didn’t know the wait could be that long. If it’s like that for me, I’m definitely taking my name off the list.

I am glad that I have an awesome option lined up. But there’s something about the finality of saying NO to Penn after regarding it as my number one for so long that is keeping me attached.
