Well, I would imagine that at such a large school they can't cater to everyone's needs, but I really don't want to live in East, so I'm hoping if I get my housing deposit in ASAP, I can have at least some priority.

You should definitely send your housing deposit in ASAP... like right now. You do get priority as I was told by the housing people through email last year.

Well just don't get your hopes up, cause it's about a 50/50 chance (hell probably more like a 60/40 chance). You could try an SLO. Most of them are in North. Some are in West and I know theres at least 1 in East.

I have met alot of freshmen living in south (I currently live in south, Atherton), and I have seen a few of the small rooms, they aren;t that bad, just one person living in them though, tend to be upperclassmen. Anyway, housing does their best to meet your needs but if you really want to live somewhere other than the armpit of PSU (aka east) then I would suggest requesting to live in a SLO.

I agree w/ the SLO suggestion, if there is one that interests you. It is a nice way to make the big school feel a little smaller. Here is a list-- Housing: Undergraduates

Just to add that my S who is a freshman now is in South, Hoyt, and South was his first choice. Looking back, I see where I sent in the deposit on 12/17/07. He applied early (late September?) and was accepted soon after or right before Thanksgiving last year. It helps to get your stuff in early as those have suggested.

PSU allows a direct room exchange. If you find someone to switch rooms with, you can do it. There is also a room switch eBoard on eLiving where you can post your room. So, say you are put in East but put in Pollock, you can see if there is someone in Pollock who wants to move to East.

I am currently a freshman living and east & i definitely recommend it. My dorm is actually much quieter than i thought it would be and because of all the storage, it doesnt seem as small as it really is. If you want to party, i guarantee you can find one in east but if you dont, its not that hard to stay away from it either. if you're majoring in business, its really close to the business building; its close to the im building (which has a small but fully equipped gym), the creamery, the stadium, and its really not that far away from everything else. No matter where you are, you'll be far away from something and believe me you get used to walking. It also has the biggest dining commons which has the typical caferteria, the big onion (a pizza place), fresh express (they have subs & wraps), roxy's ( a diner-type restaurant- they have burgers and things like that), and good to go (a convience store). its also the only place where its all freshmen so you won't feel intimidated by upperclassmen. theres also computer & study lounges, a volleyball court, a basketball court, and lots of other things. I also like how in east the rooms are definitively separated so you each have separate sides, while in some of the other living areas, the closets and beds are kind of mixed around so you dont really have your own side. EAST!

I got accepted, so now I'm really nervous about which Hall to try for. I understand that there's not a good chance for me getting what I want, though. I want the most relaxed living environment I can find; I'm much more into academics than parties. East seems to have the most party-like atmosphere but they have almost the only rooms I like the set up of.

An SLO seems like a good idea but I'm a little worried about jumping into one in my Freshman year, unless it's designated for first-years, I guess.

My son is currently a freshman in Pollock and is very happy there. Pollock is close to the Hub, South Halls, on campus convience stores and also it is just a few minutes walk to downtown. The kids usually eat in either the Pollock Commons or in South (Redifer). Redifier is supposed to have a number of different food options also. There are a number of freshman only dorms and it appears to have a pretty relaxed atmosphere.

Pollock and south are very nice locations to live your freshmen year as they are very close to the locations of many of your intro classes. Regarding SLOs, it is actually alot easier to get involved in these your freshmen year than later on, as you have to meet sertain reqs in order to become a member and get one of their housing contract. applying as incoming freshmen, you have a much easier time getting a SLO contract. Also, many freshmen also opt for SLOs as well, so you will not be short people to meet in your dorm .

I'm a bit confused. In reference to this page Housing: First-Year Students: South Halls I don't totally understand, if I requested South, would I also request Atherton, Cooper, etc or would that part be totally random?

Also, if an SLO is in a certain area, like Tener in East, does that mean no one lives in Tener but people from that SLO?

AND is the furniture movable in most halls?

For a first year student contract, you can just request an area. If you request south you would get placed anywhere in south housing area. If you wanted to live in a specific dorm (ie: Atherton) than you should request a SLO that is located in that dorm (For Atherton that would be the Honors College SLO).

Most SLO that have full dorms may have a mixture of students in and not in that specific SLO. I know for the honors SLO about 60% of the students in the dorms are honors, the rest just requested south halls and were placed here. Some SLOs just have one floor to themselves, I am not sure if all members of the floor are in the SLO or not.

I know for most of east, the desks etc are fixed and not movable, giving the east freshmen dorms a sort of "hive" or "prison cell" feel as all of the rooms look exactly the same. The beds are movable but in some cases there isn't enough room to move them very much. I know that in the dorms I have been in (some south, pollock and North suites) all of the furniture is moveable except in the few exceptins where there is a built in dresser in a closet.

what about E-house?
its the engineering college housing that i can apparently be in as a fish. it says they are in McKee hall in the west halls, but i dont know anything about west halls, except that their cafeteria is way better and its right next to the rugby field. i was in east halls for rugby camp there and discovered a s.h.i.t hole it is.
bottom line is: what are west halls like?

alright tight, thanks
and when do we have to have the housing deposit and all in?
cause i bet if i do it earlier, then i'd have a better chance of not being stuck in east halls

Well if you request to live in E-house rather than just general west Halls you would have a better chance getting into West Halls. I would get your deposit in by March.
