What are my chances as financially independent working student?

Right now I’m out of job in order to focus school but I have worked, and will work. I helped my family financially during my early 20’s. Had no direction in life besides working like a dog at a deadend job, didn’t go to school for 5 years and came back to school 2 years ago, been performing decently academically, live by myself, financially independent.

I want to transfer to UCLA as Business-Economics major or to UC Berkeley Haas School of Business.

Here are the grades since I came back

2014 Summer: A, W
2014 Fall: AAB
2015 Winter: AB
2015 Spring: AAAB
2015 Summer: B
2015 Fall: AAAA
2016 Winter: W
2016 Spring: AAB

Here are grades for my major classes and some of the major IGETC classes.

Macroeconomics: A
Microeconomics: B
Accounting 1: A
Accounting 2: A
Statistics: A
Precalculus: B
English 1: A
Biology with Lab: A
French 1: A
Business 1(Basic): A

Other classes

European History: A
Latin American Art History: A
Philosophy(Human Nature): A
Intermediate Algebra: A (Not UC, CSU and AA only)
Geometry: A (Not UC, CSU and AA only)
ESL(1 before English 1): B
Media 1(Mass media studies): B
Business Law: B

13 A’s 5 B’s

GPA(UC+CSU+AA): 3.727
GPA(UC): 3.707

Work in progress:

Calculus(2016 Summer, taking right now, 8 week course)

French 2(2016 Fall)
English 2(2016 Fall)
Physics Non lab(2016 Fall or 2017 Spring)
Calculus 2(2016 Fall)

I usually never struggle with any subjects, even the B’s that I had, they were very close ones. Could’ve, should’ve gotten A’s on those ecept ESL because the professor was ridiculously tough grader, Nobody gets A’s in his classes.

What are my chances?

Get your GPA up to 3.8-3.9. Also, try to get into your school’s TAP program, if they have one. This will make you much more competitive for admission.

@Cayton I don’t want anymore B’s I won’t get any B’s anymore.

You have a good shot but, be sure to apply elsewhere as well. Perhaps via TAG.

@NCalRent Thank you. Bump

Just be aware Haas has an average GPA of about 3.85. The fact that all your major courses are As is good. But Haas really looks at your extra-curricular activities and how they align with leadership and future goals. If you don’t have strong EC’s, I don’t know, but I think it’ll be really tough.

@Ohm888 I have worked my entire life. I’m 29 years old. I have to work. I have no time for extra curricular activities. I have taken care of my family in my early 20’s, worked, saved for myself after that and decided to come back to school. So that’s not considered as EC for them?

@brick0319 I’m not the admissions office but I think I can say with virtual 100% certainty you will not get into Haas without some stellar ECs that show leadership, especially in finance, non-profit, business, etc. Yes, other majors consider a job an EC, but not Haas. I personally suggest you choose another major for Berkeley. I’m sorry.

Providing for your family and surviving is far more exemplary of leadership than being involved in some trivial club or teeny bopper extracurricular. If they don’t want you because you’re a real human being that overcomes real problems then aim for an institution that has its priorities in order.
