What are my chances as financially independent working student?

Right now I’m out of job in order to focus school but I have worked, and will work. I helped my family financially during my early 20’s. Had no direction in life besides working like a dog at a deadend job, didn’t go to school for 5 years and came back to school 2 years ago, been performing decently academically, live by myself, financially independent.

I want to transfer to UCLA as Business-Economics major or to UC Berkeley Haas School of Business.

I usually never struggle with any subjects, even the B’s that I had, they were very close ones. Could’ve, should’ve gotten A’s on those ecept ESL because the professor was ridiculously tough grader, Nobody gets A’s in his classes.

What are my chances?

Get your GPA up to 3.8-3.9. Also, try to get into your school’s TAP program, if they have one. This will make you much more competitive for admission.

Just be aware Haas has an average GPA of about 3.85. The fact that all your major courses are As is good. But Haas really looks at your extra-curricular activities and how they align with leadership and future goals. If you don’t have strong EC’s, I don’t know, but I think it’ll be really tough.

@Ohm888 I have worked my entire life. I’m 29 years old. I have to work. I have no time for extra curricular activities. I have taken care of my family in my early 20’s, worked, saved for myself after that and decided to come back to school. So that’s not considered as EC for them?

@brick0319 I’m not the admissions office but I think I can say with virtual 100% certainty you will not get into Haas without some stellar ECs that show leadership, especially in finance, non-profit, business, etc. Yes, other majors consider a job an EC, but not Haas. I personally suggest you choose another major for Berkeley. I’m sorry.

Providing for your family and surviving is far more exemplary of leadership than being involved in some trivial club or teeny bopper extracurricular. If they don’t want you because you’re a real human being that overcomes real problems then aim for an institution that has its priorities in order.
