I am looking to get into one of the top colleges in Florida (UF, FSU, UCF). I am just started my sophomore year this year and I am currently sitting at a 3.62 unweighted/ 4.62 weighted GPA (Based off of freshman year). Obviously I do not have any SAT scores or anything, but I can tell you that I am taking several AP’s and Honors classes. Last year I took two AP’s and two honors, and I am doing the same this year. Anyways based off solely this GPA, without regard to other factors that I do know play a factor, do I have a good shot into one of these universities? I realize I have more time to raise the GPA even higher and that is currently what I am working on.

Also, what GPA do colleges consider? How do they calculate it their own way? And is it possible to bring my GPA up to a 4.0 unweighted even though I finished my freshman year with a 3.62?

I can tell you that UCF gives automatic acceptance to anyone in the top ten of their class (while meeting their other minimum reqs of course). Based on your GPA, my guess is that you are in the top ten. UCF is a great school, but I wouldn’t say it’s the most competitive in the state. Check on your class rank and keep your GPA up. Also, go on their websites and try to find the minimum requirements for test scores, GPAs, etc.

UCF isn’t THE most competitive in the state but at last look it was one of the top four (with U of F remaining the darling of IB kids across the state and FSU not terribly far behind-- I forget the fourth, either USF or UNF maybe?). If you’re in state, your guidance counselor should have a metric with all the schools in the state uni system and their general stats listed. My guess is that you’ve an extremely good chance at UCF and FSU, and would probably also get in at Gainesville-- barring any changes ahead. They’re all three very different schools though, and I’d strongsly suggest visiting each if you can, and certainly if you’re in state.
