“Story”: I was bullied alot in Middle school, so i transferred to a elite Private school a Hour away. I ahve 15 hour days and some days are very hard. the Non Honors course level at my school is comparable to a course level of a Honors course at a normal school… I went to a awful Middle school that never taught my anything or study techniques and i have had to suffer a huge learning curve. I also have a Math Disability.
School List:
Florida
SUNY Oswego (In-State)
Ithaca
Oregon
Syracuse
Ohio University
Indiana
Purdue
Emerson College
P.S. wanna look through my previous post, dont. These are my REAL Stats. my other post are some Stupid Bull Crap stats i made up to make myself feel better about my slow start to high.
If you Could just tell me Match/Reach/Safety and give me some other college suggestions i will be so grateful
Your “story” would be better for the “additional information” box, not for the essay.
You’re a sophomore. Right now, you need to get better grades - do NOT “load upon APs and Honors” until you know what you can handle. Getting a C in an AP class helps nothing.
Next year, plan to have 2 AP classes max, plus 3 honors classes. Then senior year, take one more AP class (so, 3?) plus 3 honors. Make sure to get nothing but a B in them. Since you plan to work in journalism, try to take AP English language, plus your choice from AP Economics, AP Government, AP US History, AP Psychology, AP Human Geography, AP Statistics. Take journalism, obviously. Become the go-to person for sports reporting at your high school’s newspaper. Cover sports for the yearbook. (Take photography as your art class).
Oswego and Ithaca should be okay.
If you want to play, look at D3 colleges.
You don’t need to major in journalism to work in journalism.
THE reference for journalism is UMissouri-Columbia.
Some D1 colleges (like Penn State) have a sports journalism option.
For the NYS area, look into Rowan (but facilities are less nice than Ithaca’s or Oswego’s), perhaps Plattsburgh.
Try to sleep during the long rides - even a nap can help. Don’t believe those who say sleep is over rated. its necessary for growing bodies and growing brains.
@nick2018 St. Bonaventure has one of best journalism schools in the country. Every bit as good as Syracuse and Missouri. Far better than Ithaca or Oswego.
@TurnerT Where are you getting that specific list? Yeah, all of those schools are great schools and it’s a waste of breath to say one is better than the other. There are plenty that have good programs, those you’ve given have good programs and there are also many more. Basically any AEJCM accredited school is fine to attend.
@Nick2018 I’m not very familiar with the 100 pt. scale GPA, but if I’m correct, that translates to about a 2.7? Try to get it up to a 3.0. Some schools, like Syracuse, will be a reach. Oregon, SUNY, and Ohio are doable, I think. If you’re interested in the University of Missouri at all, I can tell you that you’d be accepted to their pre-journalism program.
Those are the schools allowed to submit student work for the Murray Foundation Scholarship. A journalism blog invited working journalists to rank the top five schools a few years back and this was the top 5. 1. Georgia, 2. U Cal Berk, 3. Missouri, 4. Syracuse and 5) St. Bonaventure.
I would be interested in Missori but I’m a URM and with the recent stuff their I don’t think that’s a good idea. And no doubt I have 3.5 semesters to get a 3.0 so I will be trying my hardest

Would John jay be a good fit if majored in Pol Sci/English then went to a Florida for a Grad degree in Joirnlism since I’m more well rounded for my career path
no, John Jay would NOT be a good idea. It’s a commuter school for New York City students who want to work in law enforcement.
If you want to coach for a career, you want to major in Exercise Science, Athletic Training, Movement Science, and/or PE Education.
For CFB that would go along with a distinguished athletic career at the college level.
So, apparently, scratch that job, unless you’re okay coaching in HS (starting salary is around 34K unless you bring other things to the table).
Sports journalist means a top journalism program at a D1/D2 school with opportunities for internship on the sports team, OR at a D3 college located in a city with professional sports, where you use your sports teams as a stepping stone to getting an internship at the pro team summer after junior year.
Most D1 teams often are at university flagships, which means you’ll need to target less-selective universities. Try to get your GPA to an 85-88.
“negotiator” and “politician”… errrr…
FBI/CIA: keep your nose and your social networks clean, keep in mind that everything in your life (even in high school) will be scrutinized so you want it to be as squeaky clean as possible - no underage drinking, no bullying, no racist/homophobic humor on your social networks, no hazing, no DUI, no embarrassing pictures on Facebook. (And, no, you won’t be able to “scrub it clean” for them.) Develop fluency in a foreign language, preferably a critical one; if Spanish is a heritage language, push it to AP, or if it’s Portuguese, push it as far as you can; add a technical skill (engineering, statistics…) Join ROTC if you can.
Your goals are all over the place, but it’s okay for your age. Keep in mind that you’ll change as you grow, so keep your mind open.
Keep working on your SAT/PSAT/ACT. Those scores are excellent for a sophomore.
“For CFB that would go along with a distinguished athletic career at the college level.” Not nessecerilly true, there is a couple Solid D1 FBS coaches who never played at a elite level and Some solid D1 FCS schools who never played college. And I would be fine with coaching high school as i have ties to a elite Football high school and I would say the coach makes 75-90k including teach a Fluff Class(Gym) and he also Hosts camps so he definitely makes good $$ so i am open to coaching HS
@Nick2018 you have two great choices in New York State, Bonaventure and Syracuse.
Jim Murray was perhaps the most decorated sports journalist in history. His Foundation has awarded 11 Scholarships to Bonaventure student journalists. More than any other school, USC is a distant second.
my GPA will prolly be a 83 Ish 84 maybe by the end of this year. If average a 87 through the rest of high school i would be at a 3.0 3.1 (85-86). Do you guys think i can i can average a 87 for the next 3 semesters? any tips , study guides, Thinks to do better on tests? also I might take 1-2 Honors/APs next year which will weight my GPA… I really wanna get to a 3.0 I just get discouraged so fast… I hope i can do it
