What are my chances at UCI and UCD?

Hello! My dream schools at the moment (for a STEM major) are UCI and UCD. I was wondering what my chances are at them with an unweighted GPA of 3.67 sophomore year and a 3.167 unweighted GPA for the first semester of the junior year along with a 3.5 weighted w/ 2 AP’s. My second semester has just started at aiming for a 4.3 GPA. I have participated in some events at their colleges such as a vet program they hosted at UCD and planning on joining a pre-med program at UCI. Not anymore but once played soccer for my high school and took a college course in health care after school. If you need some other information I’ll try to respond if needed but any help is appreciated. (Not taken SAT yet)

First you need to calculate your UC capped weighted GPA for 10-11th grades only.

Here is the calculator: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

Have you taken the PSAT? If so, what was your score?

What is your intended major? STEM could be many majors…

Other than the 2 AP classes listed what other UC approved Honors or AP classes have taken?

Other EC’s beyond what you have posted?

Here is some statistical data for the UC’s based on UC capped weighted GPA and not major specific. You want to be at or above the averages for the best chances and you need to apply widely. The more competitive the major, the higher the stats are needed.

The UC’s consider HS course Rigor, GPA, Test scores and personal insight essays Very important in the admissions process. EC’s are Important.

Thanks a lot! Have a good day!

I have taken the PSAT which is not a good reflection myself though. More specifically though for my majors, pharmaceutical sciences, a veterinarian or a nurse of some sort. (by any chance do you know the competition for these types of categories? if not its ok)

SAT will most likely be at least the very least around 1300 but will aim for a 1400 - 1500

If you are looking for Nursing, only 2 of the UC’s have a Undergraduate Nursing school which are UCI and UCLA. They are highly competitive and have acceptance rates at 2.5% at UCI and at 2% at UCLA. If you are leaning towards a Nursing program, then I would look at direct admit programs where you are automatically admitted as a Freshman. The direct admit programs in California are UCLA, UCI, San Diego State, CSU Fullerton, University of San Francisco, Azusa Pacific and Dominican University.

Many other Cal States offer the Pre-Nursing program where you take the Nursing Pre-reqs and then apply at the end of Sophomore year for the Nursing school. The Pre-nursing program does not guarantee admission into the Nursing school.

California Nursing programs are all impacted and highly competitive.

Pre-Vet is not a major so you can major in any subject but you need to take the Vet school pre-req’s to apply and you will need to have some hands on experience working with animals. The top Vet school in California is UC Davis and it is very competitive. Attending UC Davis as an Undergrad does help your chances slightly when applying to their Vet school.
Other schools to consider for Animal Science undergrad programs would include Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chico State and Fresno State.

Again you do not have to major in Animal Science or Animal Biology to apply to Vet school.

Pharmaceutical Science major can be found at UCI and UCD but if you are want to apply to Pharmacy school, several other majors can also work to fulfill the pre-req courses. Biochemistry is a common major for Pre-Pharm students and that major is available at most schools.

Overall, Nursing would be the most competitive Undergrad major you have listed but all majors can be competitive and depending upon on your academic stats, the UC’s overall can be competitive.

Once you have completed your Junior year of HS, have an SAT score and a college budget, please repost with the information and CC posters can help you target schools that would fit your needs.

Thanks a ton!

Hello! I I am in my senior year now with 1310 on the SAT and my GPA sitting at a 3.7 weighted and 3.6 unweighted. I have taken 2 classes at a community college for Bio and psychology and taking AP Chem and AP Calculus AB. I don’t think my chances have improved much but i’ve been hearing that UCs are starting to look more towards personal statements.

Here is UCI’s and UCD’s s application review criteria which has always had Application essay (personal insight questions) as Very Important. You still need to meet the academic standard before your essays will be considered. Outstanding/Compelling essays will enhance not make up for other application deficiencies.
