Now, i was wondering if i can get into UCI/UDC? thanks if you can help...are there other UCs that i should be looking at?

Im sorry but right now, quite frankly, NO.
Your SAT is just too low
If you cant get your SAT up to 1800, you will have a pretty good shot and 1900 will guarantee admission

We need your UC GPA for a real assessment. Assuming it’s about 4.0, you would have the average GPA of admits. Your SAT is about 200 points below their average, so this needs to be pulled up. UCSC, UCR, and UCM would be more likely with current scores.

Hey, Thanks guys for the replies. 4.O5 is my UC GPA. I have absolutely no chance at retaking the SAT due to time constraints:[ Is there ANYTHING ELSE I can do to bolster my chances. I am not sure if this matters but im a 1st generation student and am Asian American. Also I have volunteered for 50 hours at a local organization

How can time restraints prevent you from taking the test during one of the several Fall test dates? Frankly, it’s just too competitive now for you to have much of a chance. Unless you like Merced or Riverside, I’d plan on 2 years at a CC.

Im preety sure I have to submit apps by December. Right? so I am signed up for the Subject test during the October dates. Thanks for the input:[

For the UC’s they accept all test dates until december. If your still not sure, then do some research. My advice is to sign up for the next ACT in october. Study for that for a week and you’ll still end up with a 24+ and thats better than your current SAT score. Then sign up for the SAT’s in november or December and study for them a lot on your own. Just keep doing practice tests and eventually you’ll go up by at least a 100 points. Even if time constraints are an issue, your SAT’s (or ACT) score matters a lot more if you really want to get into a state school like irvine and davis. Good Luck :)

Thanks. Thats gr8 advice, I going to go sign up for the ACT right now. I didnt think of taking it before. is it harder in comparison to the SAT

For most peope the ACT is easier. It’s a lil harsher on time, but easier on difficulty. Science is a lil difficult. Reading is all about time. Math is easy if you can do pre-calc. English is good if you do some practice tests first and see your mistakes. Take a couple practice tests before you walk in, it’ll be a major help.
You can get a full practice test at
-ACT website
-And your school should have the 2010-2011 free official ACT practice test booklet.
Make sure to take with writing because a lot of colleges want that writing section. However, the writing score isn’t part of your composite score so it won’t hurt you a lot if you mess it up like I did.

You can take the SAT in december and send it to the colleges, it will count for college admissions. And the ACT is also a good choice. I am taking it in September because i wasnt satisfied with my SAT. I dont think 1890 will be quite good enought, i want to give myself a better shot. If you are better at math and science then the ACT will be easier, you also must work quicker. If you are better at english and reading then SAT will be easier.

hope this helps and good luck

unfortunately math doesnt come easily to me but i’ll still take the test. Hey RADtomato, what college did u get into and I was also wondering if a continuous improvement in grades alter your chances? And at the end of the day, it seems as if ECs dont really matter all that much. Am I mistaken or should I continue to be involved?

Lets say i dont improve my scores…do i have a shot at UCSB with these scores and added community service hours?

yes i think you have a shot, but raising hte SAT would really help a lot, i know thats not what you want to hear, because i hear the same thing.

EC’s do matter A LOT, they differentiate a person that got a uw gpa of 4.0 with a 2300 SAT with no EC and a person that does all these clubs and commuunity service and sports that has a 3.85 gpa and a 2000. I personally think that the latter would get in.

Having been a college counselor for 2 decades, I can tell you it’s simply untrue that the ACT is easier for most. For some yes, for others no. The ACT takes prepartion, timing issues are not the same as with the SAT. Just taking the SAT a second time yields a 60 point gain on average, so in most cases the greatest improvement in the short term will be continuing with the same test.

With your current scores I would put UCSB at a less that 25% chance. The UCs are not reading for trends, their approach is formulaic. The huge part in GPA and scores.

ECs? They do matter a lot at the very top schools once you have the stats. At most schools they are unimportant.

ouch…less than 25%…@ redroses…there are posts where i have read people talking about how they got into UCSB with a 1700 SAT score and 3. 9UC GPA, with minimal ECs. why is that? thanks

@ mccormickt…hopefully it turns out well for you too:]
