umcp is real weird, im hearing lots of things. some say u need 3.7 or higher to get in, while others i know got in with 3.2-3.4 range, and others got rejected with 3.7. last year pretty much all the kids in my school got accepted a kid with 3.4 and sat of 1150 got in. most kids who got in from my school had 1150-1300 sats. and theirt gpa were over 3.5 but no one really under 3.5 applied except for 2. so u cant really tell if under 3.5 is good because those kids didnt aply. the two who did apply one got accepted one got rejected(this kid had low sats like 1030). i think if u have a 3.2-3.5 with hard course load, good essay, good school, good sat(over 1200), and is a diverse person i think they will accept you. but if u have a 3.2 while taking regular classes and like only 1100 sat you get rejected. but i also see people getting rejected with 3.6 and 1150. umcp has a huge class so i think their acceptance policy varies ALOT.

YEa I agree with you! Plus as said before, noone really knows how the college admission process wrks...! I mean Ive heard of soemone with 1200SAT get into harvard!

yeaa thats what i thought (about the deadlines) ..okay good!

Im just about 2submit my first part now!

did you do it online? if so, isn't the wesbite ridiculously slow? my dad has a really fast computer so i did it on his but each part of the application still took at least a few minutes to pop up.

Yea..im doing it as we speak right now..and OMG..its soooooooooooooooo sloww..its soo frustrating..and im trying to save the pages as I go along! its soo annoying...! Im just about to give up..i managed to send the first part and wanetd to work on the second part! AGGGghh!but im ending it there! will work on it 2moro when i have more patience!

i did it by hand, already gave in part 1. question do we have to have our teacher letters and transcripts sent out to umcp by nov 1 or is that due by december 1 like the essay, and what essay are u guys doing? i might do the diversity one.

p.s. i visited the college past summer and i just fell in love. i always planned on applying but i really didnt know much about it living in NY. after seeing how great the campus, the city, it became my first choice. wish um-cp had early decission i would have done it!

im ALMOST positive that our teacher recs and stuff are due by dec. 1, not nov. 1. I also fell in love with the campus, it is soo beautiful. i really hope i get in, if not im gonna be really disappointed..

Yea its dec 1st! hehe..!sorry to confuse u guys!
Im doing the essay on diversity to! Wow...2-3pages..thats quite a bit to write..mines about 1.5pages soo far! almost 2!DO you knwo ifthey want the essay single spaced or double..mine is 1.5 spacing! HmMm!
The campus is GORGEOUSSSSSS!!! I heard the dorms dont have AC tho..is that true..didnt get 2 visit the dorms!

the dorms dont have ac... and they kind of look like cells hehe but they still nice. question is it better to have our essay in sooner then later? or doenst matter what time its in as long as its in before dec 1. i know its not rolling but will sending like right now instead of 2 weeks give me an advantage or they dont start looking at the applicants till all the dec 1 apps are in?

I have no clue! I had the exact same question! But im guessing they'll look at them after dec 1st!

UMD is desperately trying to raise its standards to the point of other upper-upper tier public schools (UMich, some of the upper-level UC's).

That being said, I got in with a 1230. But...my split was 730V, 500M, so that makes it a sort of strange 1230. I also sent in the app, really, really late, which I think is the reason I didn't get as much money as I thought I would.

Two of my friends, however, were rejected with 1220's. However, their 1220's were comprised of far more even scores than mine.

We were all in state, by the way.

It seems to me that the key difference between acceptance and rejection is the TYPES of courses you take in order to achieve your GPA. For instance, my rejected friends had around 3.5's, unweighted. I had a 3.7, unweighted, which is not that much higher. UMD loveees lovvveees loveees the weighted GPA (Mine was 4.1, theirs were both significantly lower). All the UMD literature you've been bombarded with probably states that "the average GPA is 3.9," and then, in teenytinyprint, specifies that that's the weighted GPA. So basically, the higher your weighted GPA, the better your shot is.

I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have about UMD. I am attempting to transfer out, soooo...get the info while I'm still here!

wow!!Are they really into the essays, or is acaemic more of a factor! and how much of a factor do u think the SAT's weigh in the admission process!?

lookds good

SAT's are always going to be important, particularly at a school as large as UMD. They don't give minimum scores on the website, but I'd say around 1250 is about average for incoming students. (I'm pretty sure it's been getting harder every year)

As for essays...I don't honestly know. I had a risky one (any essay that mentions Twinkies and Plato in the same sentence qualifies as risky, I'm assuming), but I'm a good writer (that essay got me a Presidential scholarship to SUNY Purchase's Creative Writing program), so it was ok. These CC boards sort of annoy me because they seem to encourage very homogeneous personal statements. Basically, be interesting, be yourself, be grammatically correct.

That being said, GPA and high school courseload are probably the single most important factor in determining admission for a school like UMD, but you NEED to supplement it with good EC's and SAT's.

Hope that helps.

Yea..thnx 4 that info! Additionally do you think that SAT II's play a role in the admission process! Cuse I mean im submitting my SAT II scores...and i was wondering if they ae taken into consideration?
The thing is my SAT scores arent all that strong, but my GPA and courseload are pretty good...like im taking a heavy course load..and have a GPA of about 3.9 UW!

hey transfer i have taken hard course load and got all good grades but my gpa went down to c 's in spanish, will they see that i really am good just not that great in language? or will they just reject me for bad gpa. my gpa is 3.2 weighted ( i know its low)

tamy-If your SATII's are good, they certainly can't hurt you.

coastingblue-Not to be mean, but would C's in Spanish really pull you all the way down to a 3.2 weighted? What was your GPA before/without Spanish?
