I have a 3.65 GPA, and two quarters left, hoping to raise it to 3.7, what are my chances for med school?
What is your MCAT score? What are your medically related EC’s? GPA looks on target.
I think your UCD GPA is a little low for a big name or top 30 to maybe even top 50 medical school. Perhaps you can get into the next tier of medical school if you can score well on the MCAT.
This chart says 49.9% of applicants with a GPA of 3.6-3.79 got admitted to one of the medical schools they applied to: https://www.aamc.org/download/321508/data/factstablea23.pdf
You’ll see that depending on your MCAT score the percentage of applicants with 3.6-3.79GPAs who got into at least one medical school they applied to ranges from 0 to 83.5%.

?
Who cares if he gets into a top 30 or top 50 US med school? They’re all great.

I live in California, so ideally would want to stay in state? Give me your opinion please? Haven't taken the MCAT yet, but what should I aim for?

What is your science GPA?
When are you taking the MCAT?
What are your medically related ECs?
Are you a URM?
Unless you have some hook and/or a very strong MCAT, I think your Calif chances are low. Either way, you need to include a lot or mostly OOS med schools. I don’t mean OOS publics.
Most of the CA medical schools are in the top 50 medical schools in the US: Stanford, UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, USC, UCD and UCI. UCR is relatively new in the UC system and may be just as difficult to get into as some of the other UC medical schools. I believe Loma Linda might be a little easier to get into. You should look at the websites of the medical schools you are considering and review their requirements and the profiles of admitted students.
A Calif unhooked med school applicant w/o a stellar app needs to essentially assume that he will not be admitted to a Calif MD med school and look at Midwest mid/low tier med schools and others to add to the app list.
Calif just has too many high stats premeds, which is why Calif “exports” so many med students to other states. If you’re not high stats or hooked, look elsewhere (and concerns about top 30 or top 50 should be irrelevant).
BTW…are there still plans to open a med school at Merced? It would sure help with enrollment if they did.
Can’t find anything other than this which said it was “years away” 2 years ago: http://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/education/uc-merced/article3283426.html
