Okay, so I am a junior and I think I've made up my mind on a college. I want to get into NYU PolyTech. My current GPA is 3.0/4.0 and here are the classes I am currently taking.

Physics
French
AP US History
Pre-Calculus
Trigonometry/Algebra2
English
Math Team

My cumulative math average isn't that good. It stands at a few decimal points away from 80. But, I am currently in the math team and also tutor for the school math tutoring team. I think my math average is low due to laziness and not studying for tests. My science average is a bit better, standing around 86 and I have taken Living Environment, Chemistry, and currently getting 85s in Physics.

My highest is social studies, in which I have a cumulative average of 96 (my school only goes up to 95 due to weird grading policies).

Anyways, I really want to get into NYU PolyTech and am wondering what I should do and do I stand a chance.

PS: My EC is very low... I tutor for math tutoring and attend a 3 day basketball training program every week.

Thank You! Don't hesitate to ask for more information.

I’d say that NYU Poly will be a high reach for you, due to your 3.0 GPA. Also, your extracurriculars don’t seem that impressive. Have you won any awards from your participation on the Math Team, or from Basketball? That could help.

Also, what are your SAT scores? You might have a fighting chance if you get a high SAT and let your passion for math/science shine through the application. Also, if it’s not too late, I would sign up to take more weighted classes next year, if that’s at all possible. If you could display a record of improvement to the adcoms, you might be able to turn what is now a bad thing into a good thing.

Here are the classes I’m going to take next year:

AP English
AP Statistics
AP Physics
AP Economics
Basketball

I have not won any awards for basketball, which is just a program for those who want to get better in basketball. We just play around in our own teams in a JHS basketball court. It’s a program ran by some high school, I believe.

For math, I’ve gotten an award for participating in the Math Team and for participating in math tournaments in the Atlantic-Pacific conference. Anyways, would all this look bad? because my math average isn’t that good.
