Hello, I am new to this website but I JUST got my ACT score an hour ago and I’m really disappointed with it. I studied like crazy, honestly more than most people I know and took official ACT practice tests and all sorts of stuff. My predicted score was supposed to be something like 26/27, so I was excited. But nope, I ended up with a 22 I know this isn’t statistically bad, but it’s awful when you now feel so incapable and inadequate. Only one point above the national average isn’t going to be competitive enough. And math was the absolute worst, I ended up with a 17 which is especially depressing considering I studied the most for the math portion. Anyway, sorry for ranting.
My weighted GPA is a 3.85 so far (my school doesn’t offer AP courses so this is the best I could get it.) Last year in junior year I had a 4.0, and I likely will have a 4.0 again for all of senior year because I am doing really well this year. I am taking two honors classes this year as well, maybe that will up it even more? I’m not sure how that works. I have a strong passion for dance and aim to major in it, and I definitely tried to fully express the extent of my passion for dance on the applications for SDSU and UCI. I’m a member of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, so at least I have all that going for me. I don’t know, what do you all think?
SDSU is my top choice solely because it is 11 minutes away from me and I would rather stay at home for financial reasons. UC Irvine would be fantastic as I know their dance program is amazing, but I’m not sure I have the talent it takes to make it. I will try my best in the audition though! Wouldn’t want to stay in the dorm though, I’m just not a fan of dorm living and all the rules you would be subjected to. In which case, there would be much more financial stress if I went there and got an apartment and my own car And then worst case scenario, I’d just aim for community college. Not sure if I would feel too happy in a community college environment, but I’ll just have to see how everything plays out.
Sorry this was lengthy. Bottom line is: 3.85 weighted GPA so far (should be 3.9 once 12th grade is completed since I am doing really well this year), 22 ACT, no volunteer work necessarily other than dance related stuff that got me inducted into the National Honor Society, and dance is my main/only extracurricular.
UCI is pretty competitive, and their average ACT score is like 27. For a CSU, SDSU is pretty damn competitive as well. If you have the option to take the ACT/SAT again in December, then go for it. However, if you’re applying as a dance major, then you have already have a good chance of getting accepted into many schools, considering how its not a STEM major, nor is it impacted. I’m pretty sure that UC’s and CSU’s admit applicants by major so you have nothing to worry about.
Thanks! The October ACT was the last test CSU’s will accept so the December ACT isn’t an option. I sure wish I had taken the ACT or SAT earlier like in junior year, but my counselor gave me all kinds of false information. But in that case based on the major, hopefully they’ll overlook the ACT score? I want to either minor or double mahor in business administration though, and I’m not sure how impacted that might be.
SDSU is almost certain to accept you. UCI, probably not but, you are close enough it is worth an ap. CSULB and UCR are other SoCal schools worth looking at.
Good luck
UC/CSU GPA? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
SDSU admits by Eligibility index (EI) and major.
(CSU GPA x 200) + (ACT comp x10)
Since you are local, an EI of 900 may get you in. SDSU is an impacted campus so all majors are impacted.
UCI does not look possible but look at CSULB, CSU Fullerton, Cal Poly Pomona and maybe UCR although their Business major is very competitive.
All the other CSU’s and UC’s will accept the December ACT sitting except SDSU and CSU’s superscore.
Good luck
How exactly is UCI less possible? I’m just curious, because the acceptance rate for UCI is 40% and SDSU is 34%. What exactly makes it more competitive?
It is not just about acceptance rates.
Average UC/CSU Freshman admit for UCI was 4.07 last year while SDSU was 3.85. Average ACT for UCI is 29 and SDSU is 27.
Your ACT is 22 which is below the 25th percentile of 25 at UCI along with your GPA which is below the 25th percentile of 3.93.
UC’s are very GPA focused so I think the decision could be 50/50. Your EC’s and essays could help your chances but definitely not a guarantee so I would say a slight Reach. Bump up your ACT score it will help
Ah okay. Makes sense. I don’t have a whole bunch of extra curricular acitivities though, I’m not a jack of all trades. I don’t know which is more appealing (having one specific thing you love and have a passion for or having many things you’re involved in), but dance is the only thing I really do and I focus A LOT on it though, since I want to major in it. Also I wasn’t asked for any essays on either applications for UC or CSU, but UCI did ask me to submit some “personal insight” questions where you essentially just free write answers to the questions they ask.
The personal insight questions replaced the UC essays, so this is where you can highlight your dancing. CSU’s only admit by GPA and test scores. EC’s and essays are not considered.
