I am currently a junior and taking 5 AP classes along with Spanish. Recently this year, I’ve gone through some depression due to low grades, lost my friend to an unknown death, a friend moving away, and some form of bullying. I have never gotten a B in my academics and ranked 9th in my class as of sophomore year. However, this year changed. I had 3 C’s then worked my butt off for a mid B for finals, but as of now, I have 4 B’s in AP Bio, APUSH, AP Calc, Spanish 3 and 2 A’s in AP Lang and AP Psych. My counselor has advised me to use my personal statement as an insight for colleges to understand my situation, but will it be enough for me to make it to these UC’s?
What about SAT/ACT test scores? Intended major? EC’s?
Addressing some of the issues associated with your lower grades this year through the personal statements can help. Much will depend upon how your personal statements will be received by admissions and no one can tell that out come. Do your best and apply.
Sorry about that, I just realized that I didn’t provide any other information.
My SAT is 1230 and I will be taking it again this June. I have been the captain of the tennis team since I was a freshman and I play three instruments, one of which I have won awards for. My intended major will probably be psychology as it is my favorite class.
UCI is possible even with your SAT score but for UCLA/UCB, these would be Reaches. UC’s are very GPA focused but UCLA/UCB tend to be more holistic than many other UC’s.
Freshman admits with UC GPA of 3.80-4.19
