What are my chances for UCLA?

I am a transfer student who will be applying this fall. (Also to Cal, UCSD, USC)

Major: Communications (Yesss, I know about how impacted it is )
GPA: 4.0

-Honors Transfer Program
- I could be completed with my prereqs (for UCLA only) by Fall, however I may save one to take in a study-abroad program in Winter?
-BUT instead of the Statistics course listed on assist.org, I took a Statistics for Prospective Teachers class. I called both the Comm. Department and Counseling at UCLA and they said it should be okay, but is it really?
-Will finish IGETC by Fall 09.
-I have an interview for an internship in LA this week/ have an online internship with a News-based website.
-I work 15hrs a week.
-I am Asian. (This could work against me)
-I am currently running for Student Gov.
-Several clubs, however no positions in them.
-Also I am taking 7 classes right now (23 units) and will most likely get all A's. (But possibly, worst case scenario a B in speech!) Will they be able to see this schedule?

Please tell me my chances/what I can do to improve! Thanks!

Also, by Spring I will also be done with prereqs for English, which is my backup plan.
(What are my chances for getting in with that?)

I wouldn’t be discouraged by the fact that Comm is so impacted at UCLA. I was just accepted, so it isn’t impossible! I would try to keep your GPA as close to a 4.0 as possible though. As far clubs and student government go, try to get an officer position in something- it makes you look proactive.

Also, I would be reeeeeally hesitant about not taking the regular required stats class. As far as I know, assist doesn’t lie, but people in counseling departments do make mistakes. I accidentally took Stats for Behavioral Science last year and wound up doing the regular Stats that UCLA required last semester. It might be something to consider.

As far as the internship goes, it always looks good to have one, but be careful not to spread yourself too thin. I think admissions people would rather see serious involvement with one or two clubs and a part-time job that you devote a significant amount of time to, than membership in a bunch of different things with very little serious involvement in any of them.

All in all, it seems like you have a great shot! Good luck :)

I would be wary of taking the winter quarter abroad and missing the prereq. I think you have an excellent shot at UCLA, but I would keep your grades as good as possible and your route through community college as traditional as possible. With your ECs and grades, I don’t think you should have any trouble getting in if you play your situation conservatively. Good Luck!

take the stat class. don’t give them any reason to NOT accept you.

How the hell are you taking 23 units?! I did 17 last semester and didn’t make it all the way. Then again, I had French 3 and pre-cal, and they were really hard to take at the same time.

Sigh. 4.0 chance me’s, eh. You have a good shot…

Thanks everyone!

VMason, were you accepted before or after you retook the stats course?

Oh I forgot to mention some extracurriculars
-Ukulele Club in my city’s Senior Center every Saturday. (and plan to do so til I get that age!)
-I volunteer/work at my uncle’s printing press company for 6 months.
-AGS (CC’s honors society)

Would these help?

I took regular stats last fall, so I was accepted after it was completed. I asked all the counselors at my school if i really needed to take it and they all said that I DEFINITELY needed to, even though I’d already done the behavioral science stats. If it’s on assist, assume you need to take it. With a major this competitive, you don’t want to risk it.

Oh I see. Do you think it would affect my chances if I took it in Winter or Spring?

Winter is better. It’s good to have your grades in prerequisite courses on display for the schools on the application update. Although I’m finishing the Calc 2 prereq right now and got into Berkeley and LA for Econ so one in progress prereq wouldn’t kill you.

I think it’s good to have at least one or two preqeqs done when you apply, but it won’t be held against you if you don’t have more than that completed, as long as you have them planned before transfer. I was also just accepted to Haas and I only had 2 out of 5 prereqs done when I applied. I’m doing the remaining three now. Haas is a pretty competitive school at Berkeley and it doesn’t seem like the remaining prereqs were held against me.

I think I will be taking the remaining 2 in the fall and 2 this summer.

Also, is it bad to complete English major Prereqs too, because I will have 75+ credits? Its for backup incase I don’t get into COMM. I hear we can just choose which classes we want to transfer.

Congratulations btw :)
