What are my chances for UT Austin?

I have a 4.3 GPA and a 1390 SAT. I am taking 3 APs and 2 dual enrollment classes. My rank is 9/77. I took honors classes and 1 AP my sophomore year. I also took 2 college classes freshman year. I want to major in biology or medical laboratory science.
My ECs are:
NHS secretary
junior volunteer at a hospital
HOSA member
Tutor for middle schoolers
Dance team

Do you live in TX or OOS?
I;m not sure how competitive your major is, but it might be pretty hard for you to get into UT, because you’re not in top 6% (9/77 = 11.68%) and if you’re OOS, it’ll be even harder to get in. Your ECs and gpa are good, but you need more than 1 AP class and 2 college classes to increase your chances of getting in. Also consider retaking the SAT, because UTs average scores range from 1220-1460, and your score is in the middle. It’s pretty good, but to increase your chances of getting in, your SAT score has to be higher than average (>1460) to really stand out. Also, be prepared to write an incredible, thought provoking essay.
I don’t want to discourage you or anything, I’m just trying to be realistic & provide some suggestions to increase your chances of getting in.
Best of luck!!

Are you a resident of the State of Texas? Are you applying as a Freshman admit for Fall of 2021?

If you’re an in-state non-auto admit, based on UT Class of 2023 admit numbers (no numbers for the Class of 2024 yet), you would have about a 19.5% chance of admission, assuming that all other parts of your application are strong. That, however, might not be an accurate reflection of what the admission rate will be for the Class of 2025. There’s a possibility that admissions will be much more competitive for the Class of 2025 due to the deferrals from the Class of 2024 and more auto admits choosing to stay in state (Covid-19 and economic downturn fallout).

But “Chance Me’s” are little more than parlor games. Nobody here will see the full strength of your application and supplements. So, rather than chancing you, how about some advice to maximize your application opportunity and encouragement?

  1. Apply early. I can’t stress this one enough. Apply EARLY! You should be asking for Letters of Recommendation now. You should be thinking about your essay prompts now. You should be sending your test scores now. Apply as early as possible, but, no matter what, apply by the priority deadline.

  2. Take the time to write polished and interesting essays that reflect your authentic voice, and that demonstrate that you have strong writing skills. Let them see YOU through your essays. Take the opportunity to show them the YOU that they might not get from your ApplyTexas or Coalition app. Write with thoughtfulness and depth, and let them see your passions. Oh, and actually answer the essay prompt (what they asked you to write about). Please don’t waste the opportunity by rehashing/re-summarizing what your “stats”. Try to steer clear of the cliche college essay topics. And, don’t use it as an opportunity to make unnecessary excuses for why you’re not in the top-whatever percent. Take the writing seriously. UT Austin uses full holistic review.

  3. Submit all “optional” supplements. Really! Take every opportunity to put your best foot forward and show them that you’re serious about becoming a Longhorn. Consider “optional” as “not-at-all optional”.

  4. Complete the section in ApplyTexas or Coalition to fill out your ECs, but also opt to submit the long resume. Put time and effort into your resume. This is your opportunity to provide context and detail that they might not find anywhere else in your application.

  5. Get Letters of Recommendation. Ask current teachers who know you very well, and who are eager and excited to see your succeed. Give them the highlights of your accomplishments, and ask them to write letters of rec for you. Also, ask your volunteer coordinator/supervisor/director for one as well.

While no one can offer you any realistic “chance” evaluations, just remember that you’re obviously a strong student. Applying is about developing and packaging that you’re intellectually, academically, socially, and emotionally a “fit” that will make a positive impact on campus, and that they don’t want to miss out on.

Good luck!
