I just wanted some input and advice. I’m applying for college this year and my dream school is UT Austin and I want to major in biology (pre-med) and later go on to medical school. Based on my credentials will I get into UT Austin? Here are some of my credentials:
-SAT score: 2050
-ACT score:31
-GPA: 3.9
-involved in many club and organizations such as National Honor Society and French Honor Society
-Started my own fundraising campaign in high school
-Shadowed doctor at local clinic over the summer for two years.
- volunteered at St. David’s Medical Center over the summer
-volunteered in India at a girl’s orphanage to help children
What is your class rank? That is the most important factor, followed closely by SAT/ACT score. Course rigor (such as AP courses) and essays are also factors… Your ECs seem fine, so the real question is where your class rank & test scores put you on the Academic Index for CNS (google it).
I go to a very competitive high school so my class rank is 95/489 students and my SAT and ACT are already given up there.
My best advice to you, regardless of stats/rankings/EC’s is just to study hard in school and challenge yourself! There is no “cut off” SAT score they accept, and while the top 7% rule gives a lot of automatic admits, I was admitted non-auto. My strengths were my course load and also my essay that was asking about my future goal and my major. So showcase your passion for you goals in that essay, and work hard. Also submit a resume ASAP once you send in your application. That helps a lot so they can learn more about you. Good luck!
Thanks Carmen2208, I’ll be sure that my college essay is good and I am and will continue to work hard to get into UT
You are in top 20% of your class, so I think you have a good shot, especially if you had a rigorous courseload and if your high school is recognized as very competitive. The best thing you can do is try to get your act/sat score up - even a small increase could make a difference. Also agree that essays are important and you should do your best on those - get some feedback on them from someone you trust. I got into CS with a top 17% class rank, but had 35 act and pretty strong on everything else.
Thanks for the advice AustinWannabe I’m planning on taking the next ACT and SAT to increase my scores.
You did not share your course load or history. I suspect if you are at a very competitive high school that you have a lot of AP course opportunities. If you have not taken AP Chem - you should senior year. You will need the rigor of this course as a pre-med student to survive the required chemistry classes and maintain a strong GPA at college.
Have you taken many AP or IB courses?
I have taken AP BIOLOGY, AP US HISTORY, AP English 3 (literature and composition). Next year I’m taking AP PHSYCJOLOGY, AP CHEMISTRY, AP CALCULUS, AP STATISTICS, AP ENGLISH 4, AP GOVERNMENT
OK ! That is a lot of AP tests senior year!
Most important is home state. Big difference between Texas and other for Texas state schools. Class rank is low.Need to be in top 10 at least.
