I know the ivies prefer for you to have one “passion”, and mine is with the Kentucky YMCA. I’ve participated in their youth in government program (KYA) since middle school, taking leadership positions, and receiving an outstanding delegate and outstanding bill award. I’ve also attended many of their leadership conferences and service trips, and this involvement has taught me a passion for politics, leadership, and most importantly, service.

Background:
I’m a white middle class female from south-central Kentucky and I attend public school.

I know this is a lot of info, but please look over it and tell me what you think, and tell me what I can do to improve! Thanks!

I recommend applying to both. Columbia College is more selective than Barnard. A 32 ACT is very good, but it’s probably near the bottom of Columbia’s accepted range. I suggest trying the SAT, also. Even if your composite score isn’t significantly better, you might have stronger results in some sections. I certainly think you’re competitive for Barnard, especially with some geographic diversity working in your favor. If you really want to be in NYC, look into Fordham-Lincoln Center, also. They don’t have much of a campus, but you’re smack in the middle of everything, and your stats might bring a nice merit scholarship. They are best known for their performing arts programs, but they have a full liberal arts curriculum. They would not work out for you if you wanted to major in Chemistry, though, because Homeland Security regulations prohibit chemistry labs in mid-town Manhattan. You would have to travel up to the Bronx campus for that. I went to Barnard, by the way, and my husband went to Columbia (before they began admitting women). It’s a great college.
