What are my Chances of Getting into Florida Colleges/Universities

I’m planning on applying to a few colleges here in Florida (FSU, UM, FIU, Barry University). My intended major is Computer Engineering I’m going into my Senior Year and we received our schedules.

What about the other Florida Public Universities (UCF, USF, UF, FAU)? I wouldn’t recommend Barry University for Computer Engineering…do they even have that major at Barry? Why not do Calculus I, II and Physics through dual enrollment at your local CC? IMHO, dual enrollment is a better option than AP, especially if you are targeting Florida Public Universities/UM. A C or better in a course will guarantee transfer credits, while only a 3/4 or better on an AP subject will transfer.

Here’s a list of Florida schools that offer an ABET accredited Computer Engineering BS.

Bethune-Cookman University
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Daytona Beach
Florida A&M University
Florida Atlantic University
Florida Institute of Technology
Florida International University
Florida State University
University of Central Florida
University of Florida
University of Miami
University of South Florida
University of West Florida

FAMU and FSU share the College of Engineering (COE).
The privates are Bethune-Cookman, Embry-Riddle, FIT and U-Miami.

Florida Polytechnic University offers it, but this new school will not be ABET accredited for another year or so (but that’s long before you graduate, so it shouldn’t be a problem).

The best program is at UF (of course!), but UCF and USF also have strong programs. If you can afford the privates, then Embry-Riddle and FIT are worth a look.

For the Florida public universities, take a look at the State of Florida admissions matrix. It will give you the average GPA’s and test scores for admitted students at each of the 12 Florida public universities. You’ll notice that it’s sometimes easier to be admitted (early) to the Summer B term, than it is for the Fall term. You may also need to convert the new SAT score (1490) to the old SAT score or the current ACT score.

For example, at FSU (looking at GPA, your test scores are fine for any Florida public school)

The mid range (middle 50% of accepted students) GPA for summer was 3.5 to 4.1, while for Fall it was 3.9 to 4.4 (weighted GPA’s). You may have a shot at FSU if you enroll for Summer B, but the fall may be a reach.

If we look at FIU, the Summer GPA range was 3.4 to 3.94, while the Fall was 3.52 to 4.06.

Good Luck!
