I have a 3.9 GPA, which is above their requirements, however, I have a 1290 (New SAT) which is 60 points below their requirements. I was unaware of the December 1st deadline for priority petition reviews, but I sent it in 12/7. What are my chances of getting in to the program, as I hear it is hard to get into it if I am not directly admitted, but I did hear that some people had some luck getting in petitioning past the deadline, but it was 2-3 years ago.
Also, I am an out- of state student, and it could cost up to $48,000 total to go to IU, which is very expensive, so do they offer a lot of financial aid, and what can I expect to get to help myself? I am from Maryland, and a top-50 HS in the nation, if that means anything
Bump, I would really love an answer soon, please
See the Kelley admissions page for the timelines for petitions. Kelley is great in giving incoming freshmen several paths to direct admit, which is critical for the OOS student pondering commitment to an OOS school…and some applicants might work a couple of paths at once, including putting in a petition while trying to secure the GPA or test score for automatic admission. Looks like you missed the December 1 deadline, which states that a decision will be granted by Feb. 3. The next petition period covers Dec. 1-April 1 submissions, with decisions made on a space-available basis. In Winter 2016, I know that first-wave petitions received answers by late January, and students could make reservations for Direct Admit Day in February, which is a weekend not to be missed!!!
At a scholars reception in late February '16 that I attended with my student, I overheard an anxious applicant question Kelley staff on his petition, and he was told decisions would be out by early March, so that was better than getting bad news that the class was full…
IU is also good at transparency with the brackets and types of merit scholarships available for OOS-I found staff to be upfront and honest in talking money with an OOS student. However, I think Kelley is kind of in a buyer’s market for OOS students, and I hear scholarships aren’t as good as a few years ago-Kelley is in demand, and for good reason! My student didn’t end up going to IU, but we still love IU, Kelley, and it’s surely on the short list for grad school.
Good luck!!!
@IL2023 does Kelley take into account weithted GPA? I have a 3.7 GPA, 1290 SAT and petitioned with strong supplements, do I have a shot? OOS so direct admit is important
For the entering freshman class for Fall 2016, Kelley looked at the weighted GPA and superscored ACT. Looks the same this year, with old SAT of 1300, new SAT 1360 as the requisite score…read the petition instructions: exceed in one category, and be close on the other…write cogent and persuasive responses to the the petition prompts, and that’s the best someone can do!
@IL2023 forgot to mention, my weighted GPA is a 4.5, so I should be good? SAT (old) is only 10 points under.
sgw2021: Good luck-we walked out of every OOS business college admissions program knowing it was direct admit or nothing at all, given the $$$$. In-state for that matter, as well.
I would think so-4.5 is definitely bringing something to the table.
@IL2023 oh my gosh awesome! I keep stressing because I keep thinking they won’t hold my weighted GPA over my unweighted, hopefully everything works out, thanks!
Hi IL2023, Thank you for your comment, but I was wondering what is this Direct Admit day in February you are referring to, I have never heard of it. Hearing how important it is, will I be at a disadvantage if I do not find out by then? Also, seeing as you have good knowledge on Kelley, how good of a shot do you think I have in being accepted into the business school right now? I am 60 points under with the new SAT, which might be a lot, and its not like I have a exceptionally high GPA like sgw2021. IU is one of my top choices, but Im afraid I will not go if I am not directly admitted into the business program. I know you might not have a good idea, but I don’t want to get my hopes up for nothing
Also, as I already have a petition in, if I re-take the SAT and get the requirements, will I be automatically directly admitted? I might try to do that, however, I took the new one multiple times and always got similar scores no matter how much practice I had, so I don’t know if it would be worth it.
@IL2023 Sorry, didn’t know I had to tag you, I’m new to this. And thank you so much for your response!
@undecidedhssr65 is your 3.9 weighted or unweighted?
Direct Admit events are for applicants admitted to Kelley, and the main session has typically been in February, starting with a Friday night reception and the main program on Saturday through midday, and it is designed to give students and parents a preview of Kelley-staff, current students, facilities, and another chance to get a look at IU, even if you’ve already had a campus visit. There’s no disadvantage if one doesn’t go…I went with my student and it made the ultimate decision on a school that much harder! Great program, great weekend. Already decided on Kelley? Then it’s even more of a treat and you won’t be able to wait for school to start.
As to hitting the admission requirements, check with Kelley…for direct admission, I think for the Class of 2020, applicants had until summer to actually deliver the GPA or test score…of course there are other problems with waiting that long…reach out to any school if you have an admissions question (admissions like it when students call, not their moms!)…
@sgw2021 My D was admitted after petitioning and is OOS. She received the decision yesterday via email. UW GPA: 3.77; W GPA: 4.17; ACT: 27
@dadof1 hi, when did she petition for kelley?
@undecidedhssr65 It was about a month ago.
@dadof1 I petitioned a little over a week ago, 4.4 weighted GPA, 3.7 unweighted, 1290 SAT, chances?
@sgw2021 I have no idea of your chances… just giving you a data point that included stats below your stats.
