Hi everybody,
I am a sophomore and I was wondering what I should focus on junior year to increase my chances of getting in.
High School GPA: About 98.2592 (My school does out of 100) or about a 3.9 GPA
Rank: 241 out of 905 (Freshman)
Extras: Football for two years, UHS, Robotics club.
I live in Texas, and my brother is a UT Austin graduate if that helps.
What do I improve on? Should I take the SAT, or ACT? Does UT Austin take your high school’s reputation into consideration? And does applying for a specific major change your chances?
I am also Mexican and Lebanese, that seems to be a topic of discussion when it comes to UT Austin.
SAT or ACT - try both because some students do better on one or the other. Then you may retake the one that more suits you.
High School Reputation- not factored
Brother - Legacy of any sort not factored
Chances by Major - Yes UT admits by major and some are notoriously difficult to get in (Business , Engineering especially Chemical, Computer engineering or computer science). Demonstrate interest in your intended major with AP selections and extra curriculars. Take AP Calculus ro show math proficiency for any of the most competitive majors.
I’m not sure about HS reputation. Many top performing schools in my area are dropping ranking except the top 10%, as mandated by the state, to increase their acceptance rate to UT. They have found it to work. When these students are looked at holistically, without ranking and considering the HS they go to, they are getting a higher percentage of acceptances.
