What are My Chances of Getting into Wake Forest, UNC Chapel Hill, and University of Virginia?

Hi everyone! My name is Haley and I’m a high school junior from Pennsylvania looking to narrow down my college choices as I near my senior year. I have toured a few schools in North Carolina a few schools closer to home, but I would like to become more confident about what schools I can expect to get into before I apply. I am aware, unfortunately, that admissions for a lot of my favorites schools are highly competitive. The schools that I am interested in are Wake Forest, UNC Chapel Hill, and UVA. For UNC and UVA I would be applying as an out-of-state student, which I know will make acceptance significantly more difficult. I would also be willing to apply Early Decision or Early Action if it would help my chances. I know these “What Are My Chances?” forums can be a bit annoying as it is difficult to determine one’s accurate chances of acceptance. However, I’d really appreciate any insight that anyone can offer!

SAT Score: Total: 2010, Math: 700, Reading: 680, Writing: 630 (took once, so will probably improve)
GPA: 3.8 unweighted, above 4.0 weighted (my high school doesn’t tell us our weighted GPA)
Class Rank: top 15%, moving towards top 10%
Course Rigor: Freshman and Sophomore- all Honors classes, Junior Year- 1 CP, rest AP, Senior Year- plan to take all AP, art courses
AP Classes: World History(4); AP tests this May- Psychology, US History, Environmental Science, Calculus AB; AP classes
Senior Year- Biology, Statistics, Literature, Government
Sports: JV Volleyball and Club Volleyball Freshman and Sophmore year (had to stop playing because of rare orthopedic
condition and surgeries, source of inspiration to study biology and because a physician specializing in orthopedics,
hope to find a way to incorporate this into an essay)
Extracurriculars: MiniTHON committee captain (all four years, leadership), Student Council (all four years, VP senior year),
Volunteer (all four years), PULSE Penn State Hershey Medical Center(program for students interested in medicine),Ski Club, National Honors Society, National Art Honors Society, National English Honors
Society, National Science Honors Society
Community Service: Summer Volunteer at Penn State Hershey Medical Center with pediatric cancer patients
Work Experience: Lifeguard, spent time shadowing a local Orthopedic Surgeon (got to scrub-in on surgeries)

It’s a bit of a reach. OOS acceptance for Chapel Hill is extememly competitive. You might as well be applying to an Ivy League school. Get your SAT up to 2200+ and keep up your grades.

Looks like a match. Be aware that there are limited slots for interviews available, so schedule one either this summer or early in the fall. There are Skype interviews available if you can’t get back to campus.

Definitely work on improving your SAT score, that should give you more options.

As long as your SAT goes up a bit, UNC and UVA are definitely feasible. And Wake forest you will definitely get into.
Try to improve your CR and M scores of the SAT, because in my opinion those are far more important than writing.

you certainly have good shot at all of them. they’re not “slam dunks” so to speak bc they’re selective. would a higher sat score help? sure, it would help anybody. i dont think it’s really necessary

Wake is your best shot. Match or high match.
UNC and UVA are hard to get into OOS. High match.

I don’t know about EA or ED at UVA, but I’m from NC, so I can tell you a little about Wake and UNC. Both are way easier to get into if you apply early. ED at Wake has a 48% acceptance rate, and it goes up every year. 10% of Wake applicants apply ED, but they make up 40% of the incoming freshman class. Likewise, UNC’s acceptance rate is around 18% for RD and 38% for EA. Note that Wake only has ED and UNC only has EA.

Sory, didn’t realized you already chanced me.

Wake, yes. I think you’ve got it. UNC and UVA… reaching. You’ll need your SAT up to 2200+. OOS is really hard. Good luck!
