what are my chances?!

general stats

Chinese, Canadian female
SAT I: 1500 (800 V, 700 M)
SAT II: Bio EM - 710; US History - 760; Writing - 770
(i know i'm a little weak in terms of standardized testing)

GPA: 3.8 (out of 4.0) unweighted with upward trend. my school does not rank students.
APs: French Language, English Language, US History, Biology, European History, US Government - ALL 5

this year i'm taking:
AP English Lit, AP Chem, AP Physics B, AP CompSci AB, AP Statistics, Advanced Humanities, 2 orchestra classes (at the youth performing arts school, supposed one of the nation's best performing arts magnets)

ECs:
* Violin - i've done this since the age of 5. i've won a number of concerto competitions and those type of things. first violins in all-state and all-county. co-concertmaster of the school orchestra, which is performing at carnegie hall this year and at the midwest clinic (which is the world's largest music educators' conference.)
* Piano - i've done this for 8 years. more awards for piano because there are more contests and the like. studying with a fairly famous teacher. play for church worship services sometimes.
* Policy Debate - more than 3o hours a week. team captain. coach the novices. i've won speaker awards (10th out of 200 at JV nationals) and placed occassionally. all-state speech team.
* Youth Group Leader - basically coordinate youth group activities such as volunteering and outtings. liason with the adults.
* Quizbowl - one of the senior captains; we do fairly well (placed at national tournaments several times this year)
* School newspaper (9, 10) - assistant editor.
* Cultural awareness club (9, 10) - treasurer
* Literary magazine (9, 10) - editorial board
* Summerbridge (9, 10) - tutor to underprivileged public school children

honor roll, national french contest national laureate, national merit semifinalists, ap scholar with distinction (i assume), tri-m music honor society, and all that kind of good but meaningless stuff.

i have some trunctated ECs because i moved from a very small, competitive private school (that sends a high percent of grads to ivy schools) in new orleans to a large, public, magnet school in louisville, ky (which sends a few off to top 20 schools each yr) the summer between sophomore and junior year. i've moved a total of 7 times in my life (3 countries), so i'm hoping they'll find that a plus (or at least allow that to explain some of the disrupting in my extra-curriculars.)

i'm interested in double majoring in mol bio and philosophy.
(worked at a lab at the university of louisville over the summer doing genotyping and heart attack models on rats/rabbits)
teacher recs should be excellent and i'm fairly confident that my essays are good (my princeton bf proofread them for me. lol)

colleges:
yale (EA) - my interviewer told me that i was exactly the kind of person yale was looking for, to my great relief. i don't know how much that helps though.
emory (scholars program)
princeton
columbia
northwestern
uchicago
swarthmore
williams
amherst
boston university (trustees program)
tulane
and some safeties i don't have lined up yet.

please be realistic but nice. i really would like to know if i'm reaching too high and shooting for the impossible. also, i welcome suggestions on places that i should consider applying to and the like; i don't have a clear favorite among my schools other than yale and princeton.

thanks so much!

i think u will 90% get into yale. i am actually a frosh at stanford.. i just did my whole "can i get into..." post thing cuz i was workin in the ER at med school and i got bored. yeah i applied to yale early and got deferred, the rejected. i didn't even apply to harvard, but the rest i got into and with substantial academic scholarships. i think you will def get into yale, especially cuz your interview was so positive. they look at interviews very strongly. yale is an okay place to study bio, but you should consider stanford and harvard too.

I think you will be accepted to most of those schools. You have an impressive record; good ECs, good GPA, and good test scores.

Yale and Princeton still seem like a reaches, though.

Have you thought about Stanford, UCLA, or John Hopkins?

yeah, i feel that yale and princeton are reaches, but i guess they're difficult for everyone to get into, even those with far superior qualifications than mine.

and about stanford: i'm interested, but i've heard that its pretty near impossible for asians without downright amazing records to get in. correct me if i'm wrong. thanks for the suggestions; i think i may apply to hopkins.

twink1etwinkle ...
what level are your concerto competitions
how many have you won?

none of the competitions were spectacular awards or anything, just things like louisiana philharmonic orchestra and youth performing arts school concerto competition.

o yeah, i also performed on NPR's "from the top" program with my orchestra.

and now i'm really worried about yale. i checked out their site for alumni reviewers and they're pretty harsh about somethings...i feel as though i'm going to have to cure cancer to get in or something like that.

bump.

c'mon guys, help a girl out!

With... what?

;) Lol, I jest. The application process is befuddling, but in my opinion you sound like a person who has truly valued your time in high school and made the best of it. Though no one can promise you that you will or won't be accepted, you stand a strong chance because of the aforementioned.

Best of luck.

yeah it is very hard for out of state asians to get into stanford. i am chinese american and i applied from a public school in maryland/washington dc area, and at the admit reception there were about 70 caucasians, 15 latino/blacks, and THREE (including indians) asians. I was like DANG. of course not all the asians went to the reception but yes, it is very hard to get in.

still can try, right? in my opinion stanford is the best, but that's just me. Oh i just realized something.. of all the asians in my dorm, im 1 of 3 from out of california. crazy, eh?

but try anyway, i wish u luck. just capture them with an essay and who knows, maybe i'll even read it cuz i work in admissions haha

yeah, stanford seems like a bit of a reach. hm, we'll see...

bump. anyone else with suggestions?

bump.

can anyone else give rank these schools for me in terms of reaches, matches, and safeties?

well i would say that yale, princeton and columbia(considering their ed decisions) are reaches

the rest all are i would say matches
i wouldnt call any of them safeties as all are pretty tough but u have more than 70% chance in all of them

well from my HS in NJ we had two asians go two yrs ago. one was salutatorian and the other had only like a 3.6-3.7 uwgpa. neither had really eye-popping ECs.

how do you think my chances are @ upenn?

three people at my old school were accepted this yr ED, and really seem to be that competitive in terms of ECs and testing...

I think you have a great chance at these schools too:
ITT Tech
JCC
Male
j/k ^.^

okies, i'm bumping this one last time with my final list:

yale (deferred EA) =(
emory (scholars)
upenn
columbia
princeton
brown
uchicago
northwestern
williams
amherst
swarthmore
boston (trustees)
tulane

i'm so scared that i'm not going to get in anywhere. can y'all give me chances at each school (in terms of % or safety/match/reaches)
