What are my options? Please read/help!

Basically I'm currently attending a community college and I'm looking to transfer to a four year school. My high school GPA was poor and i realized i wouldn't be accepted to a worthwhile school. So i went to community college and have earned a 3.8 GPA with 27 credits completed (4.0 scale). I'm looking to transfer in for the spring semester. What are some schools that i can apply to with a possibility of an acceptance? I would like the school to be located in New York, preferably closer to the city. I'm also open to applying to schools upstate. Any schools located near New York State may also work. I need to find a college that doesn't require a high school transcript for transfer students, since i feel my HS grades will hurt my chances. Now I'm not looking for an ivy league school but somewhere that can provide me with a decent education. I don't have that much money but i don't want to be completely limited by price since I may take loans if needed. If anyone can offer suggestions i would appreciate it!

bump (hope I’m allowed to do this)

Well what major is it you want? There are a few good schools in NY that I can think of that you would probably have a chance at. First though you need more than 30 credits to apply to most of them.

Most of them don’t require high school grades if you have more than 24-26 credits (depending on the school) But i do know some of them require H.S grades no matter what for transfers.

Major wise I’m pretty much undeclared. I don’t know exactly what i want to do. I’ll most likely pursue one of the social sciences though (Political Science, Psychology, Sociology) something along those lines.

Any help? :o

Would appreciate any help at all <3

dubs84,

I teach at Buffalo State College (part of SUNY), and I think with your CC GPA, you’d probably be admitted to Buff State. Of course, we’re all the way across the state from the city, too.

You probably would be a competitive transfer applicant as most of the lower-ranked SUNY University Colleges in the SUNY system. I don’t know where you’d stand relative to the CUNYs.

You should look at each SUNY University College’s own web pages to determine their transfer application process and what the minimum requirements are to qualify for admission as a transfer student. You can find links to all the SUNY schools at [SUNY: Complete Campus List](http://www.suny.edu/student/campuses_complete_list.cfm)

Good luck.

There may be some state schools that won’t look at high school grades, but I don’t know of private colleges that won’t. How much can you spend on college each year?

Thanks for the responses.

I’ve been looking at the SUNY schools but i don’t think Buffalo is a good option. It’s probably a seven hour drive for me, and I was certainly looking for something a bit closer.

Out of all the SUNY schools what are some i may have a shot at? Bighamton, Albany, Stonybrook aren’t very far but I’m not sure I’d be accepted.

I’m also planning to apply to CUNY schools as they are very close and cheap.

Spending wise I don’t have a lot of money but I’d apply for some loans and state grants. I would like to pick maybe one or two private schools to take a chance at, any recommendations?

Cooper Union, or NYU may be good places to app to NYU may or may not give out great aid.

do NOT look at NYU if you need aid

Pretty sure NYU requires high school grades for everyone including transfers so that probably won’t work.

Any of the privates would require high school grades for anyone with one term at a CC. CUNYs are probably your best bet.

I’m considering applying to Hofstra, they don’t require high school grades if you have more than 24 credits.

Do you think this school would be out of my league or a possibility?

You should pop by the transfer office at your CC and find out what kind of help they can give you. Ask about transfer scholarships as well as general “Which school can I get into for my major?” type questions. Here is a link to the transfer scholarship page of the CC near where I live: [MC Transfer Scholarship Page](http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studev/schol.htm)
