What are some colleges you recommend I apply to? (intended journalism/communications major)

I have a 3.5 gpa at a very rigorous high school
lots of honors and I will take 3 AP’s next year
I’m a junior and still waiting for my PSAT but I did a practice test and got 650 lit, 600 math and I’m getting a tutor so hopefully it will go up
I really want to go for communications and preferably in Boston, New York or DC area
I think I have pretty good extracurriculars but I will put them below in case you want to take a look lol

-3.5 gpa at a very rigorous high school (my GPA so far this year is like a 3.7 so hopefully it will go up)
-lots of honors classes and planning on taking 3 AP’s next year

-attended Journalism conference in DC which I was invited to (now I’m a member of their Youth Advisory Board and hopefully will become a paid intern next year)
-co-founder, submissions editor and northeast manager of online Newspaper called the Glass Box News
-writing for the school newspaper (currently running for chief editor of the paper but if not I’ll get some sort of position)

-national honor society
-spanish national honor society
-chosen to represent my school at an overnight leadership conference at Bentley
-varsity field hockey and varsity track since freshman year
-works at a burger place and an after school program
-I’m hispanic and I’ve heard this helps a bit but I don’t think it’s that significant? haha

Also I’m waiting to get my psat results back but I’ve done a practice SAT and got a 650 on lit and 600 on math but I’m getting a tutor so hopefully my stats will go up

Congratulations on your hard work and success!

I see in another thread that you are interested in Syracuse, which sounds great for you. Look at Emerson in Boston, American University in DC. A sleeper choice might be Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, VA. It seems like a rising school, and it is best known for arts and communications. We’ve known several students who’ve had transformative experiences there. Richmond (RVA) is a “hot” city and now very popular with students and young professionals. Campus is an urban one, right downtown.

For aspiring writers, I love Kenyon College, though it is in a very, very small town. Small LAC, great academics. But google famous Kenyon alums, a very impressive list of writers, actors, actresses, etc.

How about the financial side? Lots of these schools would be expensive. Your search can be very different if you are full pay, or will require significant aid, or will require almost full financial support. Some schools can afford to give more aid, and you’d want to focus on those, as well as those in your home state. Always run the Net Price Calculator (NPC) for a school (available on their websites) and see how it looks for you.

Good luck!

Boston University, Emerson and NYU are city based schools that are worth looking into. Syracuse is more remote (relative to Biston/NYC) but also worth a look.

thank you so much!

What’s your budget?

Look into Northeastern, Syracuse, Ithaca, Fordham?
