Hey guys, I’m kind of worried about college since I did poorly last year as a sophomore. I live in Florida, and my goal in- state is UF and UM, and out of state I am hoping for schools that are a huge long shot for me such as UC Berkeley or if I find the cure for cancer, an Ivy, Johns Hopkins or duke, as I plan on becoming a surgeon. Here are my stats
Last year as a sophomore, I was not serious, and dropped my class ranking to 110/600 and my Unwghtd to a 2.86, and wghtd to a 4.1.
This year as a junior, I got a 5.0 wghtd first semester got my ranking to 60/600(might be 40 by the end of the year), but my gpa barely budged. The classes I am taking this year are AP bio, engineering hon, calculus hon, AP Physics, APUSH, Marine 2 hon, English 3 hon, and AP micro. I have gotten all A’s and B’s this year, and I’m also retaking chem hon since I got a D+ last year. This year, I became vice- president of evolve tech society and senior representative of keyclub. I have not taken my SAT’s or act’s yet. I got a 34 on my practice full length ACT. I’m also taking 6 AP’s next year
Sorry, I typed this up really fast and might have left things out
pls help
What will be your uw GPA at the end of your Junior year? UF puts a lot of importance on GPA and class rigor. However, it’s also very holistic, so your EC’s and such will matter. You need to try and take your first ACT or SAT before the end of your junior year (May/June), if it’s not too late to sign-up. That way, if you need to re-take them, you can do it in the fall of your senior year.
By the way, you don’t have to go to those schools to make it into med school. UCF, USF, UNF, etc., can also get you in. Not getting into UF (or UM) does not mean you can’t be a doctor.
Thanks so much for the reply @Gator88NE , I expect my weighted to be above a 3.0 by the time I end junior year, and I am preparing for the sat/act and hop to get above a 2000/30. Do you think I have a shot at UF? will they look at my grade trend? What do you think I can do to increases my chances of getting in? Once again, thanks for the reply
For UF to be a match, you need to get into the middle 50% range for admissions:
That’s weighted GPA. If not, it’s a high match to reach type of school. You can still apply, but you need to select a few other schools as matches and safeties.
Keep doing what you’re doing; keep working on your GPA, take the test, and keep up with your EC’s. Start research other in-state options (like UCF, FAU, ect.) and perhaps plan some college visits/tours. Keep working hard and good things will happen.
Good Luck!
Thanks! Don’t you think I kinda fall in the range? Because my my gpa is slightly under 4.2
Even if it is weighted GPA, it does not mean it uses the same scale and calculation method as OP. You better find it out as OP’s uwGPA is rather low.
According to a GPA calculator website, if i maintain a 4.0 this semester, i can bring by GPA up to a 3.2, and after i retake chem, possibly a 3.3.(Can bring it up even more during senior year) I am also planning on doing dual enrollment over the summer, but i don’t know if that affects high school GPA at all. Hopefully colleges can see that I have a rigorous schedule as I will have taken 14 AP’s by the time I graduate.

@Gator88NE
You can try to work out UF’s weighted GPA. It’s +0.5 points for Honor classes and +1.0 points for AP/DE/IB/AICE classes.
So a B in AP Chem is worth 4.0, while a A in honors Spanish 3 is worth 4.5 points.
IF you get your UW GPA up to a 3.3, then you will be much closer to UF’s target (assuming you’re taking a large amount of honor and AP/DE/IB classes).
Good Luck!
Thanks! And yes, I have all honors and will graduate with a total of 14 AP’s.
I calculated my GPA by UF’s admissions, and I fall just under a 4.1
