What are the best schools in Philly?

Whats your opinion? Whos better Drexel, La Salle, Temple or Saint Joseph's? Rank 1-4 please im looking at these schools and i would love to know your opinions.

1 Drexel
2/3 Temple or St. Joe’s
4 LaSalle

Temple is seen as a great deal for PA residents who would rather be in Philly than Happy Valley, and a pretty good deal out of state as well. A lot of people in Philly hold degrees from Temple, and the name is respected. The other three are often seen as not being worth the money, though Drexel is probably the strongest of the three.

With Villanova so close by, it can feel like St. Joe’s and La Salle cater to a lower quality of student.

Temple is the best school in Philly besides Penn.

After Penn (and the suburban schools like Swarthmore, Villanova, Haverford, etc.) I would rank them like this:

Drexel

Temple

St. Joseph’s

LaSalle

I agree with TominVT^^

TominVT - Can you explain some of your basis for why you think Temple would be ranked ahead of SJU In this list (let alone SJU being ranked the same in your list as LaSalle)?

leilapasko - What’s the detail behind your agreement with the list from Tom?

I appreciate the opinions, just want to understand why … we’re looking at the schools also.

I would put Temple a hair ahead of St. Joseph’s. Here are my reason’s for Temple over St. Joeseph’s:

Temple has better name recognition due to many quality graduate programs

Although Temple has a much larger student body, the SAT scores of their last incoming class were equal to St. Joseph’s, the acceptance rate was lower and the average highschool class rank was higher (slightly better student quality).

More programs available.

Better financial resources.

The two are close in my opinion but I’d give Temple the nod. St. Joseph’s has a nicer campus though.

St. Joseph’s over LaSalle was a closer still (I intended to put a 4 in front of La Salle, my mistake). St. Joseph’s and La Salle have a lot of similarities. Recently, though, the incoming classes at La Salle have been poor. To me this is important because the quality and depth of an education is limited by the average intelligence of the student body. These schools are very close in my opinion.

Of the 3 schools, though, they are so close that I would make my decision based on fit and the best price.

Drexel has better students on average but has a weird trimester system and a 5 year co-op program. Some love it some hate it. It is unique.

I was under the impression Temple was #2 and Drexel #3…

Your impression is correct.

no way. next to penn, drexel is the best school in philly. and if your looking to go into science or engineering, drexel is probably even better than penn. also, i would say temple is better than st. joes, just because it has bigger programs and probably a lot more resources. and if you’re looking at st. joes, you should look at villanova instead it’s a much better school and the same area/size

I’m a parent in the Philly burbs.

You need to look at it in light of where you want to be geographically in 5-10 years. St. Joe’s & LaSalle do not have a national rep, but regionally are respected.

Drexel has started a major process to add Graduate Programs. They take over a Med School and added the Law School. It will take time for these programs to bring a larger national following.

IMO

Drexel and Temple are equal & different – Either would be great academically. If it were me it would be a question of where you want to live during college and cost.

St. Joe’s & LaSalle I would choose only if they were more affordable. Again, between the two coming down to where you want to live.

My list:

Drexel - regionally more respected academically; not worth the price difference above Temple if you must pull full ride, but worth some premium because of the co-op.

Temple - I personally prefer living near Drexel.

St. Joes -I love the campus

LaSalle - but I could shuffle this higher if merit/aid were involved

More than Temple? Absolutely not. Drexel is where snobs go, who think they’re above a state school (i.e. Temple). Drexel is a ton of money for negligible difference in academics compared to Temple.

As a transfer from Drexel science (into Temple education ), I can say that the two aren’t close in terms of science academics. Drexel is by far the superior school in that regard (especially engineering). When I transferred, my science professors were very suspicious as to why I would leave Drexel’s science departments for theirs (as one Temple professor said, "I see you took x and y, you won’t have to worry about that here unless you’re looking for inbreeding into our PhD program).

That being said, in just about every other area, Temple has better academic programs (liberal arts, music, communication, education), considering the price. There’s a saying around drexel that if youre not there for science, you’re wasting your money – that is, you could go to Temple for a better program at half the price. (Of course, Penn is a much better school than Temple, but I guess they were left of the list for a reason  )

So it depends on the subject you’re interested in. Drexel is definitely number 1 for science students (I don’t have first hand experience with SJU or La Salle so I can’t rank them fairly). I decided I wanted to go into teaching instead of work in a lab all day, so I transferred to Temple to avoid having a large amount of debt while making a low teaching salary.

Science and engineering have never been our specialties, and thus, we’ve always put more emphasis on business, the arts, education and liberal arts.

I know you wanted to keep it to those four schools but what about villanova… i was checking out collegeclicktv.com and the students there say pretty good things about it…

Villanova is also a good school. There are a lots of great schools just outside of philly, (Villanova, Haverford/Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore), but they have a very different atmosphere than the city schools.

Can’t we all just get along and agree that Philly is a fantastic city for college? :)

Villanova is not in Philly (not that St. Joe’s really is either)
