What are the chances of my son getting into the University of Georgia.

I applied early admission but was deferred. UGA GPA is 3.74, SAT is 1850, M-600, CR-630 W-620, ACT composite is 28. 6 6 AP courses. Captain on the swim team, Work as a lead life guard/ area manager, Beta club, Sadd club and community volunteering activities. What are my chances to get into University of Georgia regular decision for the fall of 2015?

It’s OK to ask on the parents forum as a student. We don’t bite! Well, most of the time…

Colleges defer an applicant for a couple of reasons. First, it means that you are in the range of acceptance, but not at the top of the application pool- as colleges tend to admit their best applicants in the early action pool. Another reason is that they aren’t sure about you, and wish to see how senior year is going. A deferral is disappointing, but more encouraging than being denied.

Admission to any college is never completely predictable, but the second reason puts some of the outcome up to you- how you do in the next few months may increase your chances- getting high first semester grades. If there is time to do this before they consider your application, you can also take the SAT/ACT again ( your scores indicate that you do the same on either test). Many colleges superscore these tests (UGA does), so doing better in one or more sections might also help. If your application information changes- such as additional awards or honors, you can update admissions with the new information.

I also hope you have other colleges that you have applied to. The more you learn and like about all the colleges on your list, the happier you will be with however it turns out.

UGA early admissions (first round) is stats driven only. The later rounds look at LORs, essays, etc.

Its going to be competitive getting in regular admissions as their applications are up this year. As the previous poster said the next round is going to look at applications holistically and its going to depend on how your application stacks up against the rest. During regular admissions last year I heard of stellar students getting denied. Are you taking the SAT again if so send it. Keep your grades up and send them. Do a really great job writing your essays that are now required. Hope for the best and do your best but have a backup plan…

Thank you for the reply it was very helpful. He decided not to take the SAT or ACT again, he thinks his test scores are good enough, it’s his GPA that may not be quite good enough. He will be applying to UNG, University of North Georgia and possible Georgia State. Funny how it works he can easily get into any school he wants in the Georgia College/University system but out of all of them only two are very competitive, Georgia Tech and UGA. He will work on his essays and I know he will do a good job with writing those, his grades for the first semester of his senior year should be 3 A’s. We talked about his chances and we figure they are about 50/50 for RD. He is a humble and fine young man and takes all of this in stride. He has always asked for very little and very grateful for what he does have. So I hope since he is really wants this and whatever the reasons it is important to him he does get accepted. We are very proud of him.

University of North Georgia is a beautiful school and many kids are very happy there. I hope he gets accepted to UGA but if he doesn’t there is always the option to transfer later. He has a great attitude and so do you. I think in the end things happen for a reason, we just don’t know that reason. With UGA you never know who will be accepted.

From your first post, I can’t tell if you are the parent or the student. Either way, I don’t think the moderators ( I am not one) allow two people to have the same user name, so it is better for each of you to have individual one if you are both posting.

Yes, you are correct about the main two GA colleges being competitive. I think this is similar to other states (UNC/NCSU USC/Clemson UF/FSU) as those colleges are very popular with students. However, some of the other state colleges are really quite good- just a bit overshadowed by the popular campuses.

Your son sounds like a wonderful young man, and I also hope UGA accepts him. I think he will do fine regardless. I have heard of students transferring into UGA later, so that may also be a possibility for him. Best wishes to him.
