What are YOU bringing to university?

Hey guys, this is just a thread for ideas and tips on what to bring to university, especially if one is dorming. Hope this helps and that many people contribute! Thanks~

I’ll start and edit as I think of things!

PRINTER! You CAN print from library and such, but last minute, paper due in 1 hour moments REQUIRE a printer in your dorm room :)

HAMPER! For dirty clothes. You definitely do not want nasty clothes lying around, especially after a workout. Be considerate of your roommate, he/she may despise your smelly-ness. :X

Yeah. Printer, hamper, hangers, a desklamp, condoms, etc.

I’m curious about this too.

We got some sheets, a comforter, a backpack, and a thing to carry stuff to the bathroom, but personal items (TVs, etc) I really don’t know what to bring. What are the lock things called that you use to hook your computer and TV to your desks and stuff?

^I got a laptop lock that locks into the laptop and then you wrap it around a desk. Anyone bringing some type of safe? if so what’s yours like and where did you purchase it from?I’m trying to find one that’s medium to small sized for storing small electronics. Bed bath and beyond had this locking cube that you could attach to desk and beds but when I went to get it they said they weren’t selling them anymore because of some manufacturing problem : (

Are refrigerators allowed? I am considering bringing a miniature one.

If you can bring a mini-frig it is best. You can also rent one (combo refrig/microwave) for the year.

I also recommend bringing a printer but you can also try the learning center near your dorm for printing.

The showers have lockers in them so you can lock a little carrying tote for your shower/dental needs so bring your own padlock!

@Tati22:

Is the laptop lock you’re talking about the kensington? And if you don’t mind replying with your laptop, I’m still looking and really indecisive.

I’m also looking for a small safe or something similar.

@PvtPublic:

Do you suggest renting or buying a mini fridge? Do you have any suggestions on smaller/more portable printers for a good price?

@shoyon: Yes my laptop lock is the kensington.

@shoyon: I would always suggest getting your own refrigerator/microwave. You never know what people have done to it in the past regardless of how much they claim they’ve cleaned it.

Remember, when you move out of the dorms, you can always use those appliances again for your soph-senior years (ex: you move into a less furnished home).

On the upside of renting, it will be quite easy to split the cost of the combo with your roommate(s) instead of bickering over who takes what at the end of the year.

As for printers, usually the more portable they are, the more expensive they are. You can find a few for <$100 if you look around. I do like having a larger all-in-one printer (printer/scanner/copier) which isn’t much larger than your standard deskjet. The ability to scan missed notes to colleagues or copy for yourself is irreplaceable (You might make a few friends).

is there a list that shows what items we can bring to the dorms?

cuz i’m not sure if an electric water boiler is allowed or not. The silent type that boils water by just plugging it in.

in fact, soymeetsgirl recommended me to bring a boiler, said it was really convenient.

i did NOT know they give out stainless steel bottles…do they work as well as a thermos? I hope I didn’t waste 25 dollars…
