What are you doing this summer?

The question is simple: What are you doing this summer?

I'm still trying to land an internship, but it doesn't seem likely. I'll probably just work on launching my business and going to a program at UCB among other things

I applied earlier this year for two internships at a local government laboratory for research. I unfortunately didn’t get either, so I’m not sure what to do anymore with my summer. I’m thinking about contacting mathematicians at a local university about possibly taking me on as an intern, to get an idea of what they do (I might major in math) and work on projects with them.

In addition, I continue to do a lot with music. Yearlong, I teach piano lessons to a small group of students and I participate in my community’s musical production each year by playing piano in the pit orchestra (last year, I was also the rehearsal accompanist the entire summer for the cast). At my local hospital, I play piano in the surgery waiting room for families during the year and during the summer. I’d like to do more with this somehow, even though I won’t be majoring in music therapy or medicine. I know the music therapist there very well, and have shadowed her a few times before. I also do private tutoring for math for a few students. In addition, I’ll be taking an online Spanish course in order to qualify for AP Spanish next year.

I’ve also been tossing around the idea of doing a science fair project, but I have NO idea where to start and don’t have the resources that most other students have. Any suggestions?

At the beginning of the summer (less than two weeks) I’ll be going to Ireland with my school’s Madrigal Singers group. At the end (during August) I’ll be doing camps and preparation with marching band. In the middle, I’ll be doing some college visits.

This may seem like quite a bit, but it’s not for me. I enjoy staying busy, and this isn’t as busy as I normally am.

I’m a rising college freshman and an underachiever in the weird world of College Confidential (and the weird world of real life, if we’re being honest).
I applied to a summer research program, but I didn’t get in. Last week I interviewed for a job as a math tutor at a local university, and I hope I’ll get it. I also plan to volunteer at a children’s museum.

I’ll be volunteering a whole lot this summer. I’m volunteering at a local hospital the entire summer and will probably find more odd volunteer jobs to do in between

First I’m going on a cruise for a week then I’m going to the cosmos summer program at UCSD for four weeks for free! Pretty good summer if you ask me.

researching at columbia (assistive robotics – wowowow), internship at a tech startup, developing an iOS/android app, making music with my friend, working on stuff for my charity. really exciting stuff!!

I recently applied to a DCCC summer fellowship. I hope I get in, although I am worried that the colleges that I’m applying to will look at it as an attempt to pad my application.

AP Assignments, party, and volunteering

I’m going to volunteer at a local hospital and intern a couple internal med doctors and cardiologists.

Other than that, I’ll be studying for SAT/ACT, playing video games and volleyball, and hanging out with friends.

I will be learning to develop android apps, learning web development, reading, hopefully hanging out with people, learning to play the bass guitar, prepping myself for next year. I also need to learn some new stuff on the piano. And FIFA, lots of FIFA…
@rkepp12‌ Do you think it’s possible to learn to read/play piano music without a teacher? Ive been playing by ear for a few years and I want to advance my skills. I know how to read music, since I’m in chorus, but playing the piano whilst reading music is something I’ve yet to master.

@TheMusicMan07 Obviously, I’m a little biased, but I’ll try to give a good answer haha

Bottom line: it is possible, but not ideal. Music follows a lot of patterns, and if you can learn how to read music, the main challenge will be to work on your coordination between your hands. You have to practice to the point where you can look at a note on the staff and know exactly where it is on the piano without even looking. That’s how you get better at sightreading. The reason I say having a teacher is ideal is because we are able to find ways to help you that you may not see, being the learner. In addition, teachers are able to teach valuable technique that students wouldn’t know otherwise without a teacher, and we are also able to teach the theory behind music.

If you want to teach yourself, it will take commitment and a lot of practice to hone your skills. Do you have someone that you know who has played piano for a while that you would be able to go to with questions while you learn? That would most likely help you immensely. Good luck, hope this helps!

family vacation, annpower fellowship, three-week intensive debate camp @ KU, brown leadership institute course @ brown obviously, working at my dad’s law office, cross-country conditioning, volunteering at a nearby library & hospital & animal shelter as well as PSAT prep

I might see one of my friends once :frowning:

@crazycatdebater Have you gone to the Harvard debate camp? It’s much more competitive than the one at KU. Practically all the teachers and staff there are TOC!

I have one thing I’m doing lol. I it rejected for this workshop I applied for. I have a 6 week summer job. Which is good because I don’t want to look like I’m just adding things to my resume because I’m a rising senior. Will definitely do a lot of SAT Prep. I also have a pending internship at a national news station. If I get that, I will do that instead of the job.

PSAT/SAT Prep, medical science internship program at a college (don’t want to reveal name), volunteering at the state science museum, maybe volunteering at a hospital, teaching myself more German, researching for my EE, and touring with my musical theatre group. Lol I should probably get a job at some point…

I should probably get a job lol

Working as usual. I’m also going to volunteer

Going to try to find the cure to cancer so I can get into college.

Nothing academic, that’s for sure, haha. I haven’t got it figured out yet, but I’m hoping to do some soul-searching in suburbia before my family moves out of the region and I leave for college.

I think the summers after a block of schooling (eg: elementary, middle, high school) are the best because they’re so carefree. Looking forward to it.

Most of the time it’ll not be academic related. I can finally read without school in the way. Uh, I’ll volunteer for my JROTC unit and hopefully I’ll go to this STEM camp I applied to.
