What box to tick

My D wants to go to Tufts. She is applying ED1. She is also applying to NEC as she would like to do the double degree.

She is very clear that is she gets into Tufts she wants to go there irrespective of what NEC say.

So my questions is pertaining to the common app

for her Major selection her plan is to select Music as choice 1 and Russian as choice 2..is that ok?

Se coned they ask "To which School/Program are you applying?" and she has selected "5 year BA/B Mus with the New England Conservatory"..how can she make it clear that she wants to come no matter what....

First - I don’t remember putting down a major when applying (except A&S vs E). Second - sounds like a question for the admissions comittee

No need to choose major when applying. Tufts lets you decide the major by the end of sophomore year. You only need to pick A&S or Engineering school like hebrewhammer said.

I guess you can put how much you like the school in the essay.

I may misunderstand the situation but this seems inadequate to me. My impression is you still have a fundamental open question as to whether you can apply to the 5 year dual degree program with NEC and still be considered for admission to just Tufts without NEC. This information may be on the admissions website somewhere but if not it sounds like you need to get it answered by someone who works in admissions.

Hi @Svalrani. While your daughter should indicate interest in the NEC/Tufts dual program, this is primarily to allow our offices to communicate. The admissions decisions at Tufts and NEC are made independently. Even if a student is admitted to both NEC and Tufts, there is a further round of consideration to determine whether we feel that the student is ready for the dual program. Whether a student is admitted to the dual program or not, they still have the option to enroll solely at either school to which admission was offered. This holds true if the student is admitted to only one school; an offer of admission does not change based on the decision of the other school.

I’m happy to talk further; it is a complex process. alex.powell@necmusic.edu or 617-585-1103
