What can I do to improve my chances? Please help!

My main concern is my grades. Freshman year, I had a 3.6 both semesters. Then sophomore year, I missed about a month of school in total due to several hospital visits. I know that's no excuse but I just didn't have the strength, mentally or physically, to catch up on that much work. I had a 3.1 and a 3.0 GPA, and failed two classes*.

9th grade: Honors English 9, Honors Geometry, Honors Biology

10th grade: Honors English 10, Honors Algebra 2/Trig., Honors Chemistry, AP World History

11th grade: AP English/Composition, AP US History, AP Biology

Active member of Honor Society, Key Club, Gay/Straight Alliance, Symphonic Orchestra (performed at Carnegie Hall last March)

-193 on PSAT (no SAT score yet)

I really want to get into a decent school but I'm afraid that my low GPA has killed any chance I might have. I only have my junior year to try and fix this mess. What can I do besides try to raise my GPA?

What colleges are you aiming for?

University of Washington is in-state and seems to be a somewhat realistic goal. But Bard College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, UC Santa Barbara, University of Michigan–Ann Arbor all look like good schools.

Are there others you would recommend? I prefer schools on the coast.

Both coasts?

Have you looked at Willamette?

UMich would be hard as they value GPA a lot.

UMI: Reach
UCSB: Aim for 29+/2000+
UWA: Aim for 29+/2000+
RPI: Aim for 29+/2000+
Bard: Aim for 29+/2000+

Definitely both coasts.
