Hey there transfer question. But first some history:
I'm an undergrad student at the College of Staten Island. I switched from a Biology major to Computer Science last year (my sophomore year.) So last spring semester my cousin become very ill, he was a really great friend of mine. It was a huge emotional toll on me. The day he passed away I had 2 finals but I ended up not taking any final. I contacted all of the professors, one gave me an incomplete and told me I could make it up later. Another gave me a C+, said I can't retake the final. The other 2 pretty much told me I'm screwed. So 2 F's (Calculus 1, Gen chemistry 1), a C+ and an INC (Marine Biology), 0.28 GPA for that semester. Dropping my cumulative GPA to 2.08.
CSI has a grade replacement policy where if you retake a course which you received an F they replace the grade from your GPA, but it still shows on your transcript. I retook calc 1 this semester and will most likely get around a B. Probably will not retake Chemistry since I hated it the first time. This semester my grades look like: B+ for assembly language, A- for high performance computing, B (Calc 1), and an A for intermediate programming. It'll boost my grade up to around 2.5 maybe 2.6 if I'm lucky. It would require me to take about 66 more credits to get above a 3.0 but I only need about 50 credits to graduate. My expected graduation is already an extra year and half, which my parents are extremely irritated about. My mom started freaking out when I told her it would take me an extra year and half to graduate.

Sorry for the long boring story but my question: Can I transfer? I'm too late for the fall semester anyways, so it'll have to be spring. I'll be most likely be taking calc 2 in the summer over at Brooklyn college. I can bring up my GPA to like a 2.7 but those grades won't show up until December. A friend of mine was telling me Rutgers will take pretty much anyone over a 2.0, which I highly doubt. I'll apply to a bunch of Colleges (mainly SUNY's and CUNY City College) but I doubt any will accept me. I spoke to a professor of mine after the final exam and she told me not to lose hope, they might read my sob story and understand. But then she turned around and told me not to transfer "get your bachelors then head for a masters, you're a bright student I recommend you do that instead. It wont make a huge pay difference but it's easier to advance in companies or get a job with a masters degree." That's what she said but I still want to get a second opinion.

I know a 2.5 GPA is terrible but is there anything I can do? If I transfer I get a clean GPA even though my old college transcript shows I can still graduate with like a 3.0+ GPA and explain my situation to future employers vs having a 2.7 GPA and not even being considered. Most jobs require a 3.0 to even apply.

But if I go for my masters will employers even care about how I did for my undergrad? Will gradute schools consider me with such a low GPA? I'm really confused and would really appreciate some help. Thank you very much.
