What classes should I take?

I'm majoring in English in the fall as a freshman at UDub and want to know what classes I should sign up for. I'm from California, but I'm going to the first June orientation date. Any input is welcome, thank you!

You don’t just go to college and instantly begin working towards your major. In fact, doing so as a freshman your first quarter could potentially screw things up pretty bad.

Take general subject courses that give lots of usable credits. And honestly don’t even worry about that right now, your A&O session will totally prepare you for that, especially if you signed up for a specific interest A&O.

I’m a community college transfer student with over 100 credits- I’ll tell you what I’ve learned. You aren’t always going to end up majoring in what you think you’re going to. I went to school thinking I was going to be a computer science major- I went with that for a whole year before I decided it wasn’t right for me. Then I tried nursing. I finished all but two pre-reqs for nursing and found out I was WAY too squeamish for the job. Now I’m taking economics courses to see if business/economics is right for me (it isn’t). The point of the story is- your interests change- especially as you start pursuing them academically.

That being said, definitely register for English composition for your first quarter. You’re going to need it no matter what you do. My suggestion for a 15 credit load (pending you don’t have AP credit for these already) is to take English comp, chem, and any philosophy class. That gives you a good mixture of humanities, natural world, and social science. Keep in mind that you will need to take (I believe) at least 20 credits in each area.

Good luck making your decision and congrats on getting accepted!
