What college do you see me going to? Can I get into Princeton?

Actually another one of the colleges I’d like to go to is Middlebury but thee thing is Princeton is good with languages to(but not as much…) but Princeton is affordable becuase of all the aid… see I’m not “rich”(lower middle class) so checking the plans an ivy would pobly work better but by no doubt is Middlebury great… does it look like I could possibly get into there?

oh an i’m also used to bad areas I’ve moved around alot and once lived in near poverty for a year or two… the neighborhood was typically a poor one

Don’t worry about whether you can get into Middlebury. This is not the time. Figure out what you want to do in high school first, because by the time you start seriously evaluating colleges and your chances to get into them, your high school life will be coming to an end. It’s just like us trying to chance you for Princeton; an exercise in futility.

I would highly encourage Pre-Calculus, or even trying to study math over the summer and seeing if you can skip ahead a bit. And if you’re not interested in an engineering or technology career it may not be important to take AP CompSci…are there any other APs that fit your interests more?

Well OCCASIONALLY depending on demand and interest at my school there is AP Psychology or AP European History which I’d love to take… but all of the other AP classes are either art which i can’t take or online ones which I believe are physics C, and biology or chemistry but online classes stink and that’s all my school really has to offer… will colleges expect that I take less since my school has less? we only have 23 AP classes and I’m taking all of the ones I can’t… oh and one more thing… what would be better to take Physics(not AP) or AP Enviro? I may only be able to take one of those… I’d say AP Enivro. but I’m wondering if physics is important for colleges…

Princeton will be your reach. Good luck!

And mine: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/866251-anyone-can-please-chance-me-gladly-appreciate.html

Anybody is also welcomed to chance me too.

23 AP’s is a huge number! Most schools don’t offer anything near that. But you won’t be taking any of them for 2 years. Greekfire is right about the math. Rather than worrying about potential AP’s you should try to improve your math because if you’re not in at least regular calculus by senior year all your ivy chances will go down. And that’s exactly the kind of thing (and one of the few things) you can do now, study hard and try to improve your grades, check into summer math courses, that type of thing.

i will take pre-calculus along with AP Stats in 12th grade then but 23 isn’t alot considering only certain vo-tech programs at my school can take some of them and that’s how many they have AT MOST usually they don’t offer all of them… you have to subtract some like art and french and spanish becuz I can’t go that high w/o years of language there’s AP Italian but that no longer has an exam :frowning: … would being in oh say honors pre-calc and AP stats be good enough for 12th grade math? 9th grade is Algebra 1 Standard, 10th is Alg. 2 Honors, and 11th is Geometry Honors … it’s just that I didn’t get a head start in middle school that’s why I’m not so high up… so really there aren’t that many APs… I’m taking all of what I can… it’s not just how many APs i take though it’s how many AP exams i do well on… is pre-calc hard? i don’t mind lots of studying but I’ve just heard calculus horror stories… that’s all lol

There are always horror stories. Haven’t you heard the APUSH ones?

As far as evaluating course difficulty, it will depend on your school. Around course registration time for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade you’ll start hearing a ton of stories from students about how hard certain classes are at your school, how demanding or helpful the teachers can be, et cetera, et cetera. We really can’t advise you better than your friends can. You’ll figure out then if you can handle Pre-Calculus or not.

Are you planning on taking a language? This is actually something I’m unclear about: are you currently taking Italian, or are you a native speaker and just planning on taking the AP class?

My native language is English, I’m taking Italian now and will for the next 4 years and I’ll take AP Italian IV however it’s not much of an AP class anymore because there’s no AP exam - it was cancelled by College Board due to the lack of interest. I’m debating whether or not I should take French 1 in 12th grade along with AP Italian IV or if I should take a study hall so I can ensure the success in such high level classes… I’m afraid colleges will look at me like I’m a bum if I take a study hall though…

LOL! They don’t care about ANYTHING you did in elementary and middle school, not unless you committed a felony and was charged as an adult. But, I highly doubt that applies in your case…anyways you’re only in 9th grade, there isn’t enough to predict any success in future college apps. You’re doing well so far, though. Also, you probably only need at max 2-3 teacher recommendations and they shouldn’t be from any 9th grade teachers who didn’t teach you in later grade levels. So, it doesn’t matter if say your English teacher from ENG 9, absolutely despises you for leaving the room to use the bathroom daily.

Oh really cool… I never did anything even close to that but ok… how imperative is it to take AP Calc.? I don’t think I can I think I could take Honors Pre-Calculus and AP Stats but I’m not high enough to take AP Calc. … is it that important to take AP Calc.? Also do colleges look at weighted GPAs?

Some colleges look at weighted, some look at unweighted, it varies. You don’t have to take anything, there’s no guideline that says exactly what they’re looking for. That said, you may have to explain to them why you’re in a lower level math class and are you sure you can get into AP stat without taking pre-calc first?

Yes I’m sure I already talked to my math teacher who is also the AP Stats teacher… she’d love to have me in her class! =) … i didn’t go to a great middle school but I’m not staying in lower level math… my plan is:

9th: Algebra 1
10th: Honors Algebra 2
11th: Honors Geometry
12th: Honors Pre-Calculus & AP Statistics
Total Math: 5

do you think that will be alright?
the only thing I’m really missing is AP Calc. … will AP States make up for that though? or at least somewhat?

AP Stats is nothing like AP Calc

If you’re planning on taking 23 AP courses…have fun…I know a girl who took 9 AP Classes 9th - 12th (which is a lot) and still got into Princeton.

But would colleges still look at AP Stats like it’s a decent class?

Sure they would, but the applicants who apply to Princeton…about 99% percent of them have taken AP Calc

would not taking AP Calc. ruin my chances for admission… I plan on taking 7 to 9 AP classes by the way…

AP Calc is one of the things most upper level colleges use for “distinguishing boys from men”. Its a huge decision factor, but not impossible to get into without it. People have gotten into UVA with a 2.9 GPA, which by my standards, is shenanigans. But, you could be one of those fluke people. If Princeton matters that much to you, I’d check with your local community college if you can take a calculus class there.

well what I was going to possibly do was go to summer school so I can skip a year so I could possibly take AP Calculus AB … not BC but still… or maybe night school idk… why does calculus matter so much?!

At least try to get into regular calc. One class can’t “ruin” your chances, but being in such a low level class could seriously hurt it if you don’t have something else exceptional to make up for it. Generally Stat is looked at as the easier math.
Also, the number of AP classes you take doesn’t matter, it’s the number of 4/5’s you get that does.
