Spinning off from another thread. Which colleges require that all applicants include a resume with the application for undergrad admissions.
I don’t know of any that require resumes, but when my daughter applied there were several that provided an option to upload a resume, and she did.
Hard to remember - but I know FSU asked for one (may have been optional but I just looked on their website and it doesn’t say optional). Charleston (Honors) requires it - just saw on their website after remembering as well.
I think many offer an option to attach. I know we included to more than a handful such as to UNC. If Common App allowed a place for it, even optional, we added it.
We applied to 21 - can’t remember how many we used it for - but it was definitely helpful that we had one.
The other thing it helped with was when we needed one for after the next year - we already had a base to work from to make it easier. So I recommend having one.
Honors colleges sometimes do.
I am specifically asking…which colleges require (not optional) ALL applicants to include a resume with their undergrad admissions application.
What exactly did you put on this optional resume that was not able to be included on the application itself.
This is the key issue.
I was the one that started the separate thread on a template for resumes, but now I am wondering what circumstances would lead an applicant to submit a resume if it’s not specifically required.
I am asking as a complete newbie to college apps, but doesn’t adding a resume to the Common/Coalition app add a burden to the initial screeners of apps? What does it get the student beyond what is in the standard app itself?
Enquiring minds want to know!
My D was able to include a bit more detail (ex. on activities, internships) on the resume as compared to the application itself. In addition, she was in a small program within her HS and provided a brief description of it on her resume. I thought her resume was succinct but gave some additional context.
Like I said on the other thread, some students’ ECs (and honors) cannot be fully detailed in the common app activities and/or honors sections (only 5 honors can be specified in the common app…and some students have considerably more than that. And I’m not including things like AP scholar and honor roll).
It’s not many students that may benefit from sending a resume, but it is some. Many recruited athletes also have resumes.
If a college allows a resume to be submitted, then it’s ok to submit one.
This.
Was it a must? No - but like an optional essay, if they ask, the belief is to do - but not have it equal the common app word for word - just like a job cover letter wouldn’t equal a resume.
I don’t think it was forced by us. If a school asked if you wanted to upload it or required it (FSU), we included. It could be the school found it easier to use or it could be they don’t use it. I highly doubt (just my opinion) that they say - this person added a resume - throw their app in the reject pile.
If my daughter thought it added to her app and it was allowed, she included it.
No one ever said that!
But a good question is…if this is not something the college asks for, would it definitely be read as part of the admission decision making?
As noted by @Mwfan1921 athletes might need this. My musician actually had two resumes…one was a general one detailing his many music festivals and awards. And then some schools required (not optional…required) a listing of all repertoire he had played on his instrument. Luckily, we kept all the programs!
Once more…I’m really trying to get an answer to my question. What colleges REQUIRE a resume be submitted by all freshman applicants for admission? Any?
Or is this optional?
@tsbna44 here is what FSU says:
d. Upload one resume/list of activities .
So really…a list of activities suffices, it looks like. It doesn’t have to be a “resume”
FSU - don’t recall if any others require or not.
This is incorrect - at least from my POV - here is the actual text from the link I sent you:
Essay & Resume
The resume should be no longer than two pages, and may be uploaded after the application has been submitted. It should include a list of activities such as (but not limited to) service work, employment, family contributions such as caring for siblings or sick relatives, and extracurricular and summer activities.
Here’s another below - they are probably out there - few and far between. But if a school has a spot for it and the student feels they can add above what they’ve mentioned in the Common App or other app they used, why wouldn’t they? If the school weren’t interested, they wouldn’t give the option. So not sure of the purpose of the thread.

Agree it looks like FSU requires a resume of some sort.
And Nolan at Cornell.
So…there are two colleges that require a resume.
Are there any others that REQUIRE a resume of all applicants for freshman admission?
The purpose of this thread is to list any colleges that REQUIRE all freshman applicants to submit resumes with their applications. This could be helpful for some applicants who might not otherwise prepare a resume.
Ok. FSU and Cornell Hotel.
There may be a list out there already.
I’ve looked and I don’t see any such list…thus this thread.
I do understand completely that some schools allow resumes to be included as an option.
But required? I’m not sure there are that many. But I figured the hive here would be able to add to the list for information purposes.
This is a list that ‘allows’ via their app per the writers - perhaps someone else will add mandatory. There’s also an article about who requires….third link
Some colleges D21 applied to required a music resume with the music supplement. None of them required a resume for all applicants.
