What do colleges think of taking the SAT I more than twice?

June 2013
CR 800
Math 670
Writing 740

October 2013
CR 740 (didn't give a crap about it, since I already got 800 the first time)
Math 680
Writing 740

I retook the test in October to up my math score but as you can see it was all for nothing. However, I want to go for the top colleges and I don't think my super score of 2220 cuts it. My mom advised me to take the SAT again in March. Does that sound reasonable? I am really disappointed with my October SAT scores. I know I can do better because I am good at math in school and in general. Would taking the SAT for a third time affect my application in a negative way?

Three times should be fine, but I heard you shouldn’t take it any more than that.

Multiple times is no problem; schools (e.g. Ivies) seem to be telling the truth when they say they consider only your highest scores. You might consider practicing only the Writing and Math sections out of the Blue Book + Official SAT Online course and keeping track of things you tend to miss. If you’re good in general at math, then consider taking the SAT II’s in math; people tend to score better on those when they have an overall solid math background (less “tricky” material, it seems).

As for applying to colleges, look at pages like this one and make sure you’re safely within the score ranges: [Testing Statistics](http://www.dartmouth.edu/admissions/facts/test-stats.html)

I do suspect that a lot of my mistakes are due to being “tricked” by the question or to put it simply, carelessness.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking of taking SAT II Math next June anyway. I probably will continue according to plan.

I presume you are a junior? Take the SAT IIs in June and then the SAT a final time next fall (of your senior year).

I’m a senior who is taking a gap year.

My opinion: You’re done. Non superscore schools won’t likely consider an additional score as anything more than the benefit of additional practice and experience. For superscore schools a 2200+ is likely good enough to get you over the SAT hump. Take the Sat2 math if you want to bolster your math cred. GL & Congrats, A lot f kids would love to have a 2200+ super.
