What do we do Aug 22-28?

If I want to go somewhere on Friday or Saturday, is that possible?

Yep, the whole week is basically stress-free and getting to know your dorm mates, hang out and first chance to get drunk as a college student (only if you choose to, no one will force you).

you'll want to go... welcome week got really boring

it's only boring if you make it so, just like everything else in life..

I didn't know my mother had an account at cc

you'd be surprised who has cc accounts.

Many people go to other places during welcome week, especially San Francisco. It's a great time to go and attempt to navigate the BART and MUNI systems, eat awesome SF food, shop in SF stores, see concerts, whatever you want. It's a week of college without the work. Maybe you'll appreciate that after your first year.

I appreciate it now. College sounds hard.

welcome week is from the 22-28

is there any disadvantage if i come on the 25 or 26?

i have been to CAL 3 times recently so i got a good idea of the surroundings. what will i miss out on if i come on the 25 or 26? (besides meeting people)

Drab -- I don't think you caught my sarcasm
bostonceltics---there is no disadvantage but I do remember the first few days being the most eventful (Caltopia or calapolooza or some other...)

no; calapalooza was in the middle and caltopia close to the end (at least last yr)

Honestly I never come to campus during that first week. There's really not much of a point.

You guys think it will be lame if I go to welcome week this year? I missed it last year due to other committments, so it's sort of a big deal for me to go this year (even though I'll be a second year)

Where will you be living? Part of the welcome week experience is living in the dorms and getting to bond with your dorm mates for the first time in a temporary stress-free environment.

My birthday (on August 26th I turn 19) is during Welcome Week, what should I do?

I think everyone should think for themselves based on what they know already. Go if you want- miss if you want. You can really only choose for yourself. I advise people to experience at least part of it, but don't go if you get bored really easily- there's plenty to do, but you have to do it. Or you'll be bored.

Strykur, if the floor knows it's your birthday (usually via facebook), then they will throw a birthday party for you!

that's what happened with my floor. the first birthday was a huge surprise with a giant cake that everyone tipped in to pay for (except the birthday boy/girl). we did that for everyone's birthday throughout the whole year. then by the end of the year it was pretty much expected that the birthday boy/girl is going to get a cake... good time good times... times i will not forget.

OK, everyone may tell you that welcome week sucked and bla bla bla BUT everyone knows that after a month or two into school, all your friends will sit around and say "wow, remember how laid back welcome week was?" So if you get a chance, definitely be there. Make some friends, visit the frats, get free stuff (all the school supplies you need!), etc.

Strykur, I don't get what the problem is with your birthday... but in the dorms people get really excited over birthdays. And if you have friends at CAL, your birthday will set the standards for the rest of the year!

I'm not saying don't go... I'm just saying it's ok to miss it and it's pretty important to have low expectations...
