So, I’m having a hard time deciding between UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara and would like to hear more about each school.
I have heard many positive statements of each school, but would like to know more of the negatives.
Of course, I have heard general statements about each school like how Davis is a Cow town, but I would like to hear more about UC Davis in more details/examples like about which profs, dorms, programs, departments, clubs, etc. you DON’T like and why.

Don't pick your school based on which has the least amount of negatives. Visit both schools and decide for yourself. What you hear on CC is completely different then what you will experience at each campus.

Thanks for your reply, but I have visited both campuses and I do like them both a lot. That is why I would like to hear from students at Davis about their experiences and dislikes while there. I know that each student's experience is unique, but visiting a school for a couple of hours doesn't really tell me too much about that school. There's more to it than meets the eye.

it gets pretty hot in the summer

I went to the decision day and here are my negatives...

As a prospective government major I was very disappointed that there seemed to be a strong focus medical majors and agriculture majors.

I was disappointed with the Honors Program
2a. The presenter was monotonus and spoke WAY TOO FAST. Then the follow up student presenters were just as annoying to listen to.
2b. They showed no males on the student Honors panel, so the whole program came off as an honors sorority

The dorms they showed us (Trecero) were meh at best...
3a. They dorms seemed dirty. At least the room they let us see seemed like they needed to take out everything and use a fire hose to spray everything clean.
3b. Ironically, at the same time as the dorms seeming too dirty they seemed overly sanitary. This came from the white tile floors, odd beige/white colored walls that were all dirty. Maybe Segundo was better?

Those are my primary negatives about UC Davis

lol @ the irony xD that's kinda bizarre :P

I understand the OP's question about wanting to know what some people didn't like about Davis.

A good place to look for this is the Students Review website. Search 'students review' on google and it should be one of the first links. Just search 'Davis' and then click 'Life at Davis', and you'll find some pretty substantial comments and criticism from Davis students themselves. You'll be able to see their majors, too, so you can see which programs have the most or least problems.

As an incoming freshman myself, when I went to Decision Day, I guess the only downer was that Davis didn't have as much around it as maybe UCLA. But at the same time, this is one of the reasons why I am picking Davis, because I really want to focus on my studies and so being in Los Angeles or some other wild, 'happenin' city would probably end up in me going clubbing in LA every night instead of studying.

I don't think I really have the specific negatives you need. But I think Students Review definitely will.
I think the board is trying to stop me from spamming, so ask me if you need the real URL (if you can't find it via Google).

Wow, there are a lot of negative comments about UC Davis... =(

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE DAVIS :). I visited the campus and I just knew it was the place for me. Such a good fit. But the OP wanted to know negatives, so I offered the only one I had--which was a pretty minor negative (that was actually a positive in disguise, haha).

IMO the recommended website is horribly biased. By and large the happy students (remember 91% of UCD alumni would recommend their school) don't post on these sites. Keep in perspective if you go to such a site you will be getting mostly negative information.

^^ Agreed, and this goes for all of the colleges in the system. You are going to see a larger ratio of negatives to positives then there really are. Notice that almost all the UC's have a B- or lower score. Also every 1 in 20 comments or so you find someone who felt like they went to a maximum security prison for four years and give the school straight 0's. Just take what you read with a grain of salt.

I know it's a horrible cliche, but nothing's perfect. No matter where you go there will be things you don't like. What's important is that you can see yourself at a school and that you feel the good overpowers the bad. Sure, Davis has it's various flaws, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a place that doesn't. Just go with what feels right for you.

Remember that college is about new experiences and seeing the world. don't just focus on what other says about the location, studies, and stereotypes.

maybe you'll grow to love it or hate it and transfer. i remember my friend saying he hated UCR but after a year, he loved it.

i think no matter what, if you go in with a clear mind you will find positives and make a good atmosphere for yourself.

I'm a freshman at Davis right now, and although I love UCD to bits, I'm not going to lie and say that there aren't any negatives...because everything has a negative if you look hard enough.

1) There's no convienant, cheap place to buy, say, underwear or pillow cases in Davis. There is no Marshalls, Ross, Target, or anything like that within the town. You'll have to take the bus to go somewhere else to get those type of things. We have little shops downtown that do sell these things...they're just mighty expensive.

2) While Davis isn't a dead town, there really is not a plethora of things to do or see on the weekend. We have movie theatres, but no malls.

That's all that I can really think up of at the moment. Really though, everyone's experience will be different, and I may be biased, but I think that Davis is more pretty darn awesome than anything... If you have any specific questions about Davis, feel free to ask me! :)

How many UC's have a mall closer than UCD? The only one I can think of is UCI. Still even there it would be a very long walk. UCD has two huge malls within a 12 minute drive in Sacramento and there is a Wal Mart in Woodland that is even closer. Soon the new Target will be built in Davis and that will be within biking/walking distance.

I just have to post about the ************** website. Anybody can post a comment. You don't even have to be a student at the school in question. You can tell just by the comments that there are people who post over and over again. It may be ONE disgruntled person who keeps posting negative things. You can post about a "rival" school. Imagine the accuracy of those comments! A twelve year old can post a comment about a particular school. In fact, some of the comments seem to be made by twelve year olds.

That site is entertaining, but don't choose a school based on what you read there.

^^^ students review ^^^^ site. Is that a bad word???

it's like C011ege Pr0w13r... the moderators edit its name and web address. I think in large part because of the reasons you stated above.

With good reason. I couldn't agree with you more Adultparentmom!

I didn't really read anything but the thread title, and I can say this:

The only thing I don't like about Davis is Spring Quarter, when I have allergies from April-June. Other than that, Davis is awesome.
