What do you spend your financial aid on?

For those I guess who sometimes have some left over (after paying for tuition, housing, and for books).

I've had grant money left over (not loans) that I used to buy things like books unrelated to school (because I like to read) and other non-college things.

My roommate got grants and loans, had a lot of money, and he spent money on weed, alcohol, and pizza.

My excess money from last year all went to my travel fees for study abroad. Any extra I have from here on out is going towards a savings account for grad school.

My excess money from the loans go straight to my checking account so I can write a check for that amount back to the lender :(

I am holding onto my excess in loans because I can’t really work much while I am in school and I don’t want to graduate with huge debt and zero money in savings, I am saving it for my start up costs and for an emergency fund. I usually get a few refunds of $500 a year, so it adds up. I use a small amount for personal expenses, as it is just not feasible to live with zero income-- and a crapload of it went into my summer classes and transportation costs, but I am saving most of it for a car (no public transport in my area, will need one for work), security deposit on an apartment, and then the rest will be an emergency fund.

This year though my housing is several thousand more expensive, so I may not get much of any money back. I suppose that’s not a terrible thing, I feel really weird about putting loan money into savings but I really think I’m going to need it when I graduate.

I have extra money left over each semester - scholarship money though, not loans. It’s pretty much my spending money since I don’t work during the school year. Although most of it goes unspent - I do use it for gas, etc.

“he spent money on weed, alcohol, and pizza.”
Sounds like a good investment. Maybe you guys should be more like
him.

A few times I had like $1500-2000 left over and took a birthday party to Jackson Rancheria to gamble. But mostly food and bills or miscellaneous items… and the occasional game.
